Give advice to younger people.

What I'd like to do here is offer advice to those who are younger than myself, and get advice from those who are older than I.
Many times Ive thought "If I knew then...what I know now, I'd do things differently."

Well...

For those of you who are still in school.....

Study.
Study really hard...

If you dont....you'll end up pumping gas for a living.
Or washing dishes in some dirty restaruant.

No kidding.

Those are going to be your choices in life, if you have no marketable skills.

Even if you hate school.....do it anyway.....the alternative is winding up in a crappy job you REALLY hate.

Having kids..or getting married before your mid twenties is stupid.

I know many people who have done just this....
All BUT ONE COUPLE are divorced, and miserable.

Whos next?

Don't waste time going to uni for 4 years. Sure it'll be a laugh, but you'll leave in dept and NOT be sure of getting a highly paid job.

Its a much better bet to become an apprentice for someone and learn a trade. It'll pay off in the long run, no depts, and good money!

He might yeah. But i'm happy with 40k a year. Its enough, i'll be a master craftsman, and happy. You don't need a salary with five 0's on the end.

(i'm only 16 so there's not a lot of advice i can give)

Be careful how you treat your parents and how you talk to them, one day (it might be a long time in the future, it might be tomorrow) they'll be gone and you'll regret every nasty thing you said to them and every time that you disobeyed them and there'll be nothing you can do about it, you won't be able to tell them how sorry you are, no matter how much you want to

I've always been partial to Uncle Bill's:

People often ask me if I have any words of advice for young people.
Well here are a few simple admonitions for young and old.
Never intefere in a boy-and-girl fight.
Beware of whores who say they don't want money.
The hell they don't.
What they mean is they want more money. Much more.
If you're doing business with a religious son-of-a-bitch,
Get it in writing.
His word isn't worth shit.
Not with the good lord telling him how to fuck you on the deal.

Avoid fuck-ups.
We all know the type.
Anything they have anything to do with,
No matter how good it sounds,
Turns into a disaster.
Do not offer sympathy to the mentally ill.
Tell them firmly:
I am not paid to listen to this drivel.
You are a terminal boob.

Now some of you may encounter the Devil's Bargain,
If you get that far.
Any old soul is worth saving,
At least to a priest,
But not every soul is worth buying.
So you can take the offer as a compliment.
He tries the easy ones first.
You know like money,
All the money there is.
But who wants to be the richest guy in some cemetary?
Money won't buy.
Not much left to spend it on, eh gramps?
Getting too old to cut the mustard.

Well time hits the hardest blows.
Especially below the belt.
How's a young body grab you?
Like three card monte, like pea under the shell,
Now you see it, now you don't.
Haven't you forgotten something, gramps?
In order to feel something,
You've got to be there.
You have to be eighteen.
You're not eighteen.
You are seventy-eight.
Old fool sold his soul for a strap-on.

Well they always try the easiest ones first.
How about an honorable bargain?
You always wanted to be a doctor,
Well now's your chance.
Why don't you become a great healer
And benefit humanity?
What's wrong with that?
Just about everything.
Just about everything.
There are no honorable bargains
Involving exchange
Of qualitative merchandise
Like souls
For quantitative merchandise
Like time and money.
So piss off Satan
And don't take me for dumber than I look.

An old junk pusher told me -
Watch whose money you pick up.

Hard to say, it depends on your qualifications and the market at the time.
Programming is relatively safe to go into as everything is becoming more and more dependant on computers.

Some of my own would be this:
Whatever you're going to do, it'll be for most of your life. Make it worth it. I'm not talking paychecks, trying to become "Elmer Fudd, millionairre-I own a mansion and a yacht..." I'm talking about finding that thing that is going to make it worth doing.

This is a highly personal thing. There are people who are completely fullfilled being accountants, I don't doubt (or understand) this. Don't be afraid to take your time to find what it is, don't be afraid to go after it all guns once you find it. There is no limit, no water mark. You could find it at the age of twelve of fifty.

I watched my father chase the dollar. I watched him achieve and be consumed by it. Now my brother makes more than he does teaching guitar. Guess who's happier, guess who has more to show for it. (my brother actually makes quite a bit, my dad-not so much...) It's gotta be something your happy to do. Otherwise the paychecks won't matter, and will never be enough.

That doesn't neccisarily mean chase rainbows, bills still have to be paid and food ain't free. But there's a way in almost anything if your willing to look.

Don't be afraid to accept help. It's a problem I've had and when I look back at all the legs up I didn't take it almost makes me cry.

Until then I shall use my university qualifications (which i shall get 2 years from now) to educate young people and help forge a brighter workforce, to show the future leaders of my country the value in pursuing whatever they desire and to install pride in who they are.

Those thinking of doing History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology or most other humanities based programs in university, know this.

You will most likely have to do graduate school if you want to find employment. So start looking at grad schools now, ask what the employment ratio for their students are and how many either continue to do a doctorate or leave to work in the private/public domain.

My advice would be this...

1. Ask the advice of older people you trust, often, even if you don't always take it. It's always good to know what it looks like from another point of view, and when you mess up, you'll know why.

2. Be careful what comes out of your mouth. Even if you watch what you say, you'll still mess up sometimes, but at least it cuts down on the times you'll have to look back on and cringe. Nothing you say can ever really be taken back, and words are more powerful and far-reaching than you imagine, affecting people way down the line like dominoes.

3. Watch out for freeloaders. They are all likeable people, but that's how they stay freeloaders. They will agree with everything you say, except when you say that rent is due tomorrow. The best way to get rid of one once you've got one is to breathe down their necks about money until they leave.

4. Learn to manage money. Write down what you spend and put some aside every time you get paid. This isn't always possible, but at least you know what you're spending your money on, and the earlier you learn to manage money the more you'll have left when you need it most. Nursing home rent is about $4000 a month.

5. Get an education. Get a trade if that's what you want, maybe a trade is better. At least there is no shortage of jobs for builders and mechanics, and they get paid well. It's worth the investment.

6. Learn to have confidence in your abilities. You can depend on yourself, you don't need anyone else to run your life. You are capable, but if you mess up, don't be afraid to admit it and try to do what you can to fix it, and learn from it so it doesn't happen again.

7. Be kind to those around you, and tolerant. This doesn't mean to let them take advantage of you, but you never know who you might be talking to. They could be on the edge, waiting to kill someone who's rude or snotty to them, and being polite could save your life. You never know.

8. Keep away from druggies. It's not worth the trouble. Slumming isn't worth it either. You don't want to be a part of that world, and if you sink too deep into it, there are people there who will eat you alive.

9. Don't lend out books or movies or comic books unless you don't mind that you won't get them back. Same thing with money.

advice to younger folk:

you are just as smart as your parents, probably smarter, and there are scientific studies that prove it. don't let them talk down to you, don't let them disrespect you, and don't believe for a minute that they know better than you about YOU. they may know better about drugs, or driving, or cooking, or buying a home, but they don't know what's best for YOU any better than you yourself.

do drugs safely (since i know you will do them sometime). don't do stuff that will permanently scar your body or instantly hook you, like heroine or PCP, because that's what intelligent people refer to as being a chump. you don't want to get chumped, so don't get yourself hooked so that a dealer can make a fortune off your stupidity.

have sex all you want, but use bloody protection. i don't care if you were raised Catholic or if you are embarassed to ask for jimmy hats at the corner market, USE THE GODDAM CONDOMS. if you get pregnant or diseased it's your own bloody fault for being stupid, and i will personally take five minutes out of my day to laugh at your stupid ass. get on the Pill or get your girl on it, and double bag it if you have to, but do NOT mess around with out protection. it's literally the dumbest possible thing you can do, and that includes using drugs, driving without your seatbelt on, swearing at the President, and bringing a flaregun to school.

oh, and learn about good music for Christ's sake. we're all sick of that teeny-bopper and pop-hip-hop-ripoff crap, so get some taste or turn down your speakers. get some nice classical music, like Nirvana, early Metalica, and even one of the first coupla Greenday CDs. never hurts to visit the 80s punk era, either, and more recent selections could include Mest, Puddle Of Mudd, or the subtle and brilliant work of Stephen Lynch.

yeah, that'll do for now.

never regret anything you do, you always have a reason for making a particular choice at the time and it's your mistakes that are part of the reason why you are who you are and why your friends and family love you
