Discussion?
On a nation sim board?
What gave you that idea?
Only if it gets really bad...

Sure, the author has every right to lock their own threads.

An Argument? No. A debate? No. A flamefest? yes.

The auther has the right to request that their thread get locked. I can only assume that someone would quickly lose all the respect that was held for them if they start having all their threads locked when they take a bad turn.

I read the last few posts of the thread in question, it was 90% poop throwing, 8% rhetoric and 2% content. It was probably best for those involved to walk away. Throwing in a 'last word' thing knowing it would be locked is kinda weak, but really-that was goin' nowhere.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. If the competition has decided to lock his own thread, it just simply means that you are the victor. What's so bad about that? And you can always ridicule him/her to death afterwards, which is very entertaining.
But is it acceptable you ask! Well, I wouldn't be too happy about it. But I think people don't want to be embarrassed because they've lost the debate. So what better way to do that than to lock it and wait until it slowly makes it way to the bottom of the list?
Again, it doesn't make a difference to me.

It depends. If the thread is terribly off topic, it's definitely appropriate, but in order to stop debating, never.

Locking a thread over a disagreement is perfectly acceptable, so long as one of the people disagreeing is a moderator because moderators can do no wrong.
I recommend you lock this thread, seeing as there are many disagreements....
