Battle of the Bands
Okay here's an idea...
((((((NO FURTHER NOMINATIONS))))) VOTE HERE (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3316852)
Which band will recieve the NS Greatest Band Award
the age old question... which band is better than which... Well, here is your chance to answer it...
Here's how its gonna play out... Each person is allowed to nominate 10 bands.., bands that recieve 2 or more nnominations are then on the list of nominess... There will be several brackets and rounds where voting will be held to determine the winner in each round. Pretty simple... Just like a simple tournament.
Since the taste in music is varied you can nominate any band you choose... It can be all jazz... it can be all pop it can be all anything... If I get enough participants, I may organize each bracket first by music genre...
I bet this idea will fail due to lack of participation, but oh well here goes nothing...
The Brackets:
4 Brackets... Winner from each bracket goes to the quarter finals.

AC/DC - It's said that they put the "heavy" into "heavy metal"
Black Sabbath - Brought metal to the masses. "All metal is bad Black Sabbath."
Ozzy Osbourne - Improved on Black Sabbath's music.
Judas Priest - Any band whose music supposedly drove two kids to attempt suicide has to be good.
Metallica (from the '80s. In the '90s, it was the Band That Called Themselves Metallica) - Made metal better in the '80s.
Ramones - Come on, they're the Ramones. Nuff said.
MC5 - One of the first punk bands. Getting back together.
The Stooges - One of the first punk bands.
Social Distortion - THE best band to come out of Orange County, California...EVER
Blue Oyster Cult - Listen to "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" and you'll know why.
Those are mine. I'm actually seeing Ozzy and Judas Priest at Ozzfest at the end of July.
Pink Floyd
Black Eyed Peas
Kumbia Kings

HOLD THE FRIGGEN PHONE! "I'd do anything for love (but I won't do that)" is one of the best songs ever written! The only line people concentrate on is what is THAT? I sent a very angery e-mail to VH1 for thier 50 worst songs and rose several levels of Cain. They still haven't responded.

So what won't he do for love?
Any assumption...?
I hold no grudge against the song... nor Meatloaf... and thats ong unfortunately get stcuk in your head... Even if you watch a clip from the music video on the worst music videos countdown
I watched that 50 worst videos countdown... and they tend to concentrate on little details for some songs in their countdown for some reason... Then again I didn't like any song they played on there so it's okay...
But it was funny listening to their wisecracks at times...

So, being the music efficianado I am, I am going to nominate the ten best bands that I like:
-Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads (Randy was Ozzy's guitarist for the Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman albums. In my opinion, Randy was the best guitarist EVER!!!)
-Quiet Riot: This band was started by Randy Rhoads, the best guitarest ever, so naturally I love them. I have found material of theirs from when Randy was their actual guitarist, and it really rocks!!! However, Carlos Cavazo (their guitarist after Randy) isn't too bad either. Plus, Quiet Riot was the first heavy metal band to get an album in the top 40, so it's their fault that heavy metal became so popular. Of couse, it wasn't a bad thing!!!
-Judas Priest: Just listen to the album Screaming for Vengeance album!!! It fricken Rocks!!! Also, the song Prisoner of your Eyes, which was previouly unreleased is one of the best song's I've ever heard!
-Led Zeppelin: They get this nomination for two reasons: One, they singlehandedly made rock 'n' roll ROCK 'N' FRICKIN' AWESOME ROLL!!! and two, the A side of the second album of Physical Graffiti (Yes, I listen to vinyl records), which includes the songs In the Light, Bon-y Your, Down by the Seaside, and Ten Years Gone.
-Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force: I know this is a wasted vote because I'd be surprised if anyone has ever heard of Yngwie, let alone actually vote for him. However, he is one of my favorite musicians, although he and I disagree on some aspects of guitar playing. He is very neo-classical in style. He is also probably the fastest guitar slinger ever. It's mind-blowing what he can do. Also, speaking of neo-classical music, I like Stradavarious, a finnish metal band. I'm not actually voting for them, because they're even more obscure than Yngwie, but they are great song writers.
-The Scorpions: They wrote the song Wind of Change, which is one of my all time favorite songs. I also get chills whenever I hear Blue, or Big City Nights, or Still Loving You, or any of their music, really. Plus, their German, which is really cool. Similar to the Scorpions is UFO, whose lead guitarist, Michael Schenker is the brother of the Scorpians' guitarist, Rudolph Schenker. I'd vote for them, but I don't listen to them enough to actually vote for them.
-Van Halen: It's been said before, and it's going to be said again: Eddie Van Halen is one of the GREATEST guitarists ever. I agree that he is really good, and teamed with either David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar, the band was a song writing monster worth mentioning.
-The Beatles: I am a musician, and spend a lot of time playing music. And it's the Beatles fault, too. When I heard the song "Hello, Goodbye" on TV on the Beatles Anthology, I knew I liked the beatles. So I bought my first CD- Abby Road. From there, I decided I wanted to learn bass guitar. And after that, I soon picked up piano, three years later I started trombone, another two years and I was playing guitar, and now I play the trumpet, drums and saxophone to some degree, too. And I'm only a sophmore in High School. Yeah, so even though I don't listen to the Beatles too much, I owe my future career to them.
-The Alman Brothers: These dudes are awesome!!! I've heard a lot of their music, and each time I am amazed at the musicianship they have. They have two drumers, which is a feat in itself. Plus their music is really complicated, but they execute it perfectly in all their live shows. They also blend just the right amount of pop, with southern rock to make a very unique style.
-Queensryche: I only own one of their albums: Empire. I cannot for the life of me put it down. Song after song is written incredibly well, and they just plain rock. From that album alone, I'd say they're one of my favorite bands, like EVER!!!
There are many other band's I'd like to nominate, like Queen, Rush, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Whitesnake, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, White Lion (who has guitarist Vito Bratta. I am a hair's length away from saying he's my favorite guitarist ever.), Poison, Ted Nugent, or Kix. I am glad to see Metal church on the list too. I'd vote for them , but I've only heard the song Badlands by them. And as for classical, I like it, (Go John Williams!!!) but it shouldn't be nominated for a battle of the bands. Neither should jazz, because they also label themselves an orchestra and not a band. It's sad not to see bands like the Beach Boys, the Supremes, or Grand Funk Railroad. I'll admit that they don't rock as hard as some of today's bands, but you have to give them credit.
I'll stop talking for now.
Ok, this is gonna be random and I'm sure I'll forget someone I really like :? here goes:
The White Stripes
The Doors
Led Zeppelin
Cake
The Beatles
Tool
Queen
Ben Folds (...errr.....Five.....if it has to be a band)
They Might be Giants (lyrical genius)
Does the trans-siberian orchestra not count?
If not....The Postal Service...or Death Cab for Cutie (I just want to nominate Ben Gibbard...his lyrics are so...real...it makes me happy :D even when it's the most depressing song I've ever heard :cry: )
edit: actually, I want to nominate Heart and Jefferson Airplane...so you may remove my last two options
5 more bands...
Its crunch time... its highly unlikely that someone will second a band now... so instead of choosing your favorite bands that may not be as popular check back to see what already has one nomination... If you moderately like them you may as well nominate them...
Soviet Haaregrad

Slayer
Poison the Well
Dillinger Escape Plan
Small Brown Bike

Joy Division
Dark Throne

4 more bands... come on people... nominate bands that have already been nominated by someone else so that they may get the necessary 2 nomination minimum to be actually and officially in this tournament of sound.

I wish I had known about this sooner. Your list has a number of glaring omissions, such as
* The Pixies
* The Replacements
* The Smiths
* The Strokes
* The Rollins Band
* (The?) Smashing Pumpkins?
* Soundgarden
* Alice in Chains (though I am loathe to admit it, they were important...)
* Dinosaur Jr.
* And, of course, the greatest band of all time... THE TRAPEZE ACCIDENTS.
Blame public opinion :idea:
RATM won Round 1 in the Modern Warfare Bracket
Now we move into the The Pile Bracket... The Offspring vs. Pearl Jam

Toughest decision ever...but gotta go with SLLAAAYYYEERRRR!!!
Children of Bodom vs. Pantera is tough too, Alexi Lahilo is one of the most talented guitarists I have seen, yet Phil Anselmo is an amazing vocalist
Tool totally screws Coldplay

You left out one of the best . . . Jane's Addiction.
I didn't leave out anything... You just weren't here to nominate them.
With a meager voting turnout Pantera claims victory over the Children of Bodom.

Round 1
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
Meh, who cares?
Round 2
Jimi Hendrix
Dead Kennedys
DK all the way
Legends of Metal
Round 1
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Maiden, because they never recorded the Black album and the bollocks after it.
Round 2
Pantera
Slayer
Slayer. By a mile.
Modern Warfare
Round 1
Rage Against the Machine
Tool
Difficult... such extreme shitography on both parts.
Round 2
Green Day
Sublime
Hmm...
The Pile (Misc.)
Round 1
The Offspring
Nirvana
Both highly overrated, but at least Kurt had the decency to kill himself when he ran out of ideas.
Round 2
U2
System of a Down
Once again, pure shitology. A band I've hated for more than 15 years, or one I've hated for about 5. What a dilemma!
RATM and Tool is the best, most logical, matchup yet...same era, both have the same roots and some of the members even went to school together.
