Are you sure it isnt damaging your eyes even more. Its not that fact that its light. Its the fact that its a moving picture.

It's a flickering picture, as well as a small picture that needs to be squinted at, in some cases. Sunglasses might help with the UV radiation, but the best solution is to get a monitor with a good refresh rate. The 19" monitor I have refreshes at 100hz (100 refreshes per second) at 1024x768, which is adequate, and means I don't have to park my nose a foot from the screen to read small fonts. Older monitors may be far slower, and even good monitors are slow if you run them in silly high resolutions. TFT flat-screen monitors don't flicker as such, but the older ones have an annoyingly slow response time that results in a picture full of traces and ghost images.
Also, if sunglasses are helping, perhaps investing in a monitor radiation shield would be a good idea? That and occasionally taking a break...
