Slipknot: devil worshipers?

How has slipknot ever become popular? To me they are a bunch of devil worshiping freaks. Who could ever like them besides devil worshiping freaks themselves?

They have become popular because doing 'freak' stuff appeals to people who have been outcast themselves, and because people like the shock-factor stuff that makes religious-types freak out.

I don't think they're a very good band though.

I will concede so far as to say that a few of their songs are okay--however not memorable. I'd choose Slipknot over Tool for example--but then again I hate Tool (yeah watch a hundred people will respond angrily saying that Tool is great Tool is good--why the hell do so many people like Tool? ). Slipknot I have no mjaor qualms with.

Slipknot has a few good songs but the main idea is that they're apparently "a bunch of devil worshiping freaks." If they do worship satan than that's fine. It's legal in the U.S... as long as nobody gets killed.

I used to like them about 5 or so years ago. They opened for Machine Head and Coal Chamber. Not a bad live show.

However, I don't listen to them now. But back then I did not worship Satan or whatever else people think that others do because they listen to a certain type of music.

Really? I like them both. Slipknot is more of a fast paced band, while Tool is more of a moderately slow one. With Slipknot, you hear screaming and a lot of bass and guitar. I don't know about you, but I don't really find much "meaning" to their music. It's just basic screaming about how much they hate the world, which appeals to me only on some days.
With Tool, it's a more subtle kind of rock. They still have the same hollering that Slipknot has, but it comes to you in in waves, not continuously. I listen to Tool when I get restless of the more heavier rock. It's like a lunch break to me, but I still think they're much more badass than Slipknot. :P

Slipknot are the diet coke of devil worship. They only claim to be Satanist for the cheap publicity. The true Satanist groups are mostly from the motherland of Norway. Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon, Nargaroth, Mayhem, Burzum, Dark Throne, Emperor, the list goes on and on. Slipknot are an ok band but they are nothing compared to these groups who are actually good sound musicians and performers. All I can say is American metal is an utter disaster.

look at my post. i read about this one band that ate one of their members! (no shit that really happened)

If you're referring to Mayhem, that's an unsubstantiated claim. Their former lead vocalist Dead shot himself in his home and the other members Euronymous, Necrobutcher, and Hellhammer found his body, this much is true, from there on out the story tends to get a little hazy. Some said they boiled his brain and ate it. This has never been proven however. What WAS proven was that they took a picture of Dead's body and used it for the cover of their album "Dawn of the Blackhearts" look it up, I dare you. They also took fragments of his skull and made them into amulet-like necklaces and sent them to various members of the Norwegian metal community. For what it was worth, Mayhem at least weren't a group of over-paid posers. They truely lived Black Metal...the unfortunate part is that it killed most of them...Euronymous was later stabbed to death by their replacement bassist Count Grishnackh...who is still in prison in Norway right now.

Okay I gotta agree with GB... it is... It truly is... there are only a few good US metal bands... Well okay a little bit more than a few... but still too few.

Secondly I personally hate Killswitch Engage and other modern American thrash metal bands... They seem to all sound exactly the same nowadays.

Probably the scepter of horrible modern metal in my opinion is Fear Factory. This is just my opinion, so please don't flame me.

Lastly, notice that no one said that they didn't like Tool besides me... Notice that I was right in my prediction that there will be plenty of people saying how much Tool rock and how great it is. Even the hardest of the hardcore death metal people, I often find saying that tool is okay. What the hell am I missing there? Seriously visit any metal forum... should one member mention how he doesn't like Tool, you'll find a hundred cogent replies refuting that assertion. Any other band and you're bound to find some support.

Thrash is punkier sounding then metal, but heavier then old school hardcore. It's closely related to speed metal, but not the same thing.

Those are speed metal, thrash is an offshoot of hardcore, think bands like Stormtroopers of Death, Suicidal Tendencies, Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, stuff like that.

Thrash is punkier sounding then metal, but heavier then old school hardcore. It's closely related to speed metal, but not the same thing.

Okay in that case I don't particularly listen to thrash... My mistake... metal is difficult to classify at times...

I was specifically talking about the modern thrash metal bands...

I like Metal Church and Testament very much so... I mean their the more established bands ya know... If the metal band was around in the 80s, there's a much higher chance that I'd like it as compared to a random metal band of today...

I'm nto saying that there are no good modern metal bands out there... there are quite a handful... it's just they are hard to find...

Slipknot is very mainstream. I do not like them at all, too simplistic for me. Mayhem are the true pinnacle of satanic metal, they're one of the most extreme norwegian black metal bands. The best one is Emperor, though. Enslaved is good too. Dimmu Borgir are also quite good. Zyklon is another one worth getting into.
