Work or Sanity?

It has come to it at last!

I take adderall for a hypoactive lymbic system. Drug tests for employment look for amphetamines. Adderall give a false positive for amphetamines (partly because adderall is actual dextroamphetamine).

If I don't take the adderall I quickly lose my mind and fall into this nice little world of paranoia, panic attacks, and no connection with reality. So without the medicine, I can't function normally.

With the medicine, I can't get an adequate job (adequate meaning able to support myself).

So what would you do?

If only industry were controlled by worker syndicates instead of bosses.

Be upfront about it. When an employer asks you to take a drug test, explain to them you are more than happy to, but you currently take a drug that gives a false positive. Be willing to provide them with pharmacy documentation as well as your doctor's number.

It's kind of a crappy situation, though, because it forces you to disclose private medical information about yourself that you might not want a potential employer to know and they have no right to ask for...er, at least in the US. Laws outside of the US I'm not too sure about.

Berk's exactly right--provide them with all your medical info up front. In the US you have rights that prevent employers from discriminating against you for medical reasons, unless the job is such that you cannot physically perform it (i.e. a paraplegic wanting to be a firefighter). So give them every bit of info you can, including signed letters from your physicians describing the effects of the medication, and then go for it.

i say let yourself lose the connection with reality. its more fun that way :P

actually I agree wwith Berk :!:

or look for a job that doesnt drug test if it becomes too big of a problem to get them to listen to reason although I dont think you should have any problems unless you are illegally taking prescription medication

There's nothing I can do now. I checked, and it turns out that because I didn't disclose my medical information before the drug test nothing I can prove will matter. So I shot myself in the foot. I'll deal with that.

What upsets me is the fact that I won't be able to apply to that place for an entire year and at the end of that year, they'll most likely turn down another application.

Well, at least you know now in case there's another job you want to apply for.

Get a job that requires you to be insane. Religeon and Politics comes to mind...
