Well?

I *hate* my school, but I'm not stupid enough to throw my education away. In America it's practially handed to everybody on a plate. It seems like so many kids at my school are just throwing it away . . .

If it's a choice between a) going to school and possibly getting a decent job or b) learning nothing in school and being stuck in a dead-end job for the rest of my life, I'll go with school.

I'm sick of kids here who complain and whine. I say, get up your terrible-fashion-loving asses and cram that book up your ass! No one cares what you think, and people will care less once your making minimum wage as a K-Mart cashier.

it is everyone's right to recieve an eductation. unfortunately, education is just about the last things that the american public school system can do.

and colodia, even a university degree can't always save you from a minimum wage job at k-mart.

But it's better than no degree at all

These days you don't have to choose....

me and homeschooling have an interesting relationship. in theory i'm all for it. however, far too many people homeschool their kids to keep them from learning the truth about their fuct up religious beliefs. the university i went to had a homeschooling convention every year. and every year i would walk through the gym in utter shock that they even let creationists within 3 miles of there, let alone allow them to sell their bullshit to naive people.

Schooling and education are not the same thing. Many people go to school without getting an education and many get educated without going to school. Education is just as much learning to make a table as learning times tables. Many people would benefit from learning a trade from age 12 onwards with no formal schooling or just basic reading and arithmatic. Formal schooling is only suitable for formal subjects like maths, english, science or economics. Forcibly incarcerating teenagers in schools where they don't want to be is the main reason for juvenile delinquency. Let them do what they're interested in and everyone will be happier and wealthier.

Yes but at that age, most people can't think in the long term. They might be interested in, say, fishing but what happens in later life when they realise they don't want to spend their life hauling fish into a boat? You need to give each and every child a good classical grounding. Thats what school is for.

If they don't like it they can go back to school. What's the problem? What excuse do you have for incarcerating someone who wants to do something else.

Not all of them can. What happens if by that time they've got a family and kids to support? Its better to force them to do things earlier for their own good.

This is just my personal opinion- however, I do have a practical plan.

We go back to the old English educational system which is still used in Singapore.

Kids take a variety of exams at the ages of 12, 16 ('O' Levels) and 18 ('A' Levels). Based on the results are streamed into various academic programmes. The ones who are less academically inclined get vocational training instead of academic training.

This is something I'll never agree with you on. Violently forcing people to do something "for their own good" is almost always immoral. Often incarcerating them in schools, especially failing public schools, is not in their own interests anyway. I have countless friends who hated school but once they went out and got jobs they were much happier. Many are now going on to college years later.
