Managing a manic episode

What are signs of a manic episode?

You may have unique manic behaviors that you are able to identify. Family and friends can help you identify other manic behaviors that you exhibit. General behaviors associated with a manic episode include:

Abnormally happy, irritable, or energetic mood along with several of the following:
Unrealistic feelings of self-importance
Decreased need for sleep
Increased talkativeness
Racing thoughts
Easily distracted by things that are not important
Intense focus on reaching a goal
Dangerous or irresponsible behavior, such as driving too fast, spending too much money, or having unprotected sex
Extreme behavior that causes problems for you on the job, in social situations, or at home.
Symptoms that are not due to substance abuse.
Symptoms of psychosis, such as hearing voices.

What you just described could also be an adolescent coffee drinker. They too have all of those traits in common- reckless, insomnia, risky behavior, extreme mood swings, and extremely determined.

Does that make them maniacs? No, that just makes them human. :-)

Mania has been subsumed under the definition of "Bipolar Disorder" for a few years, but psychiatrists now realize it remains a separate disorder as well, distinct from depression.

Traditionally, teenagers were the primary patients diagnosed as manic, but this diagnosis has lately been expanded to include "the elderly", which would include our friend Rummy.

Some would dare add unprotected sex for what he is doing to America.

Apparently your source overly simplifies these symptoms. The same could be said of any number of people.

My daughter didn't shut up for years on end when she was a kid. She would talk to the wall, I swear. She is not bipolar, she was just incapable of silence.
