If religion is the opiate of the masses then Nietzsche must have lived a sheltered life.

"But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality."

No, it makes fundamentalism dangerous drug abuse. Christianity is the crack.

If religion of the everyday variety is opium, I think it follows that insanely strong heroin is fundamentalism. I dunno, it seems like a better analogy than crack (which is not an opiate at all).

If religion is opium, then I've been sober for 6 years. We should start an OTMA (opiate of the masses anonymous!)

real world: Here and now, survival, fun, eat, drink, be merry.

nope. we're talking about what we can see and touch and generally experience NOW, not in some possible afterlife

I didn't miss anything. I chose to interpret it differently :P

Anyway, religion seems like it is an addiction to me. (By the way, I don't do drugs or drink very often or anything, so I'm not hyprocritical)

I don't think religion is the opium of the masses. I've never seen an angry pot smoker. Angry religous people I've seen heaps of. But then again pot is a depressant. Religion (especially Catholicism) is pretty depressing.

Opium is not pot.

Opium brings us such wonderful things as heroin and hash.

The original quote was religion is the opiate of the masses. Meaning it made them slow witted and addicted.
