Roll Your Own NationStates?

I've been kicking this idea around for a few months, so I thought I'd post it here for comment - what would you think of the idea of "rolling your own" NationStates? I mean, since the system is closed-source, and to be honest, there's really not much to the current one, and seeing as the second version will cost money to access, I'm just curious if this would be a feasible alternative. No, I'm not trying to "compete" with Max - this is more of a "Gee-Wiz" kinda deal, and I don't really consider it "competition", anyway - anyone with a bit of political and technical knowledge could roll a basic design like NS; what keeps people coming here is the community, something that code alone cannot create. So, insight? Tips? Rants on how by throwing together a couple of hundred lines of code, I can completely destroy the NationStates community?
*sets bacchial on fire for even thinking of being so mean to max barry*

I expected that type of reaction. Look, if we judged NS on code alone, I wouldn't give it any real awards - Max is a writer, not a programmer. Not saying he doesn't know what he's doing - just saying it's not something that geeks drool over at night. I simply want to make my own code - the political insight, community, etc, would all be left up to whoever. Hell, if Max wanted to use the code himself, he could. Besides, if you're worried that this is somehow going to bankrupt Max's plans for NS2, like I said before, NationStates has a community going, not to mention hilarious political insight, etc. If what Max produces quality-wise is still better than the free code, then he won't feel a pinch.

you can make your own game, i wouldnt suggest ripping it off nationstates though. max is a marketing genius, but in essence, the game is pretty basic. its as you said the community taht makes ns so great.
the hardest thing about making a game would be getting the players. ns is so simple it doesnt require long periods of time to learn how to play.

Like I said before, this is more of a tinkering project - I don't have any interest in becoming a code jockey, per se. I just posted this to see what people thought of the idea, and if they had any interesting insight. So far, none seen.

I love the way Max Barry is regard as some deity figure. And why not?
What you are forgetting is NS is not famous for it's code, there are plenty of sites with better code who have less then one hundreth NS's following. It's the community that makes NS, hence it''s biggest feature is the forums. If the site included abilities for war, trade, etc on the game section it would become rather cheap, and just another online game.

Listen: my main goal is to simply provide something fun to tinker with, and I'll leave it up to whoever what gets done with it - I don't plan to compete with Max, a fact that doesn't seem to be sinking through. I just wanted feedback on the system itself, not the politics around whether it'll work or not.

One cannot ask for feeback on a system that doesnot yet excist, and if you are asking for input the only input that can be given based on nothing is whether the theory could function or not. Come back to NS when you donot shame me by association.
