Terrorism at the Olympics?

I'm just wondering how many people think something is going to happen in Athens this summer? Its been a hot topic news item for a few weeks now, especially since some of the athletes have stated they might withdraw. Also, Americans attending have been told to not wave flags and to be very reserved and act...well...Canadian.

Anyways, it seems like a very likely target to me....look at the facts:

1. Anti-American sentiment the strongest that I can ever recall abroad.

2. Host country is not known for strong, pro-American feeling. Couple this with the fact that there are terrorist groups that operate in Greece that their government has had difficulty containing.

3. Facilities may not be complete or will be rushed to completion. With such a rush to complete the facilities, what might be missed?

4. Spending for security is over 1.2 billion dollars as opposed to Sydney only having spent 300 million. Greece can't afford such security measures and the IOC can't contribute the full amount.

5. Olympic history of such events, the most memorable perhaps being the 1972 Munich Olympics but also the 1996 Atlanta Games.

What do you all think?

Maybe with the fear, American athletes will behave themselves...

I don't want anything to happen, but it is likely. Though if it's likely that probably means it won't. That makes sense to me, anyway...

The Atlanta thingy was pretty weak, but the Munich certainly not and would not want that to happen. Who knows. Maybe the games will foster international goodwill and co-operation...

ah dreamin'....

I'd heard it was in Paris? If so I certainly hope there will be attacks. I'd like to see how the frogs react when they get their share of hatred from the Islamofascists.

Well let's take a look at my brand new crystal ball that can predict the future...

...well....it appears that there'll be a new Olympics event. "Stadium Building" is what they call it.

I'm optimistic, I don't think there will be one.

the revolutionary groups in greece tend to mainly go after state officials when they go after people at all. and then there's the weekly fire bombing of a bank and some cop cars. they're against the olympics, but they won't go out to hurt spectators or athletes. not the anarchists anyway.

We'll never know, until of course, it actually happens. But I'm guessing the security will be pretty tight, so...

Just occured to me,
I was asked this twice before-
Atlanta: I said no.
Salt Lake City: I said yes.

So checking my track record and aiming for the best I'll say, yes there will be.

Now we can have a safe Olympics.

but then again, the olympic police state is one of the things that the greek anarchists have big objections to.

i predict firebombings of cop cars, and possibly some sabotage.

Oh man, someone accused me of being a Republican?? That's kind of funny.

I don't live my life in fear, nor did I race out to buy duct tape. I was simply asking a question because this has been in the news a lot and I heard the topic being discussed on ESPN Radio. Merely asking people what they think doesn't mean that I'm cowering in fear at the worry of a terrorist strike. Hell, when you live beside several large chemical plants, you pretty much become desensitized to alarms and warnings by age 2....unless its the "Kiss your ass goodbye" whistle.

During Ancient Greek times city states actually stopped fighting each other on the battlefield to fight each other on the trackfield. Wonder if this would happen?

not terrorists - greece has a large number of left-wing revolutionaries. and they don't like the state too much. or the american government that was partially responsible for the dictatorship of the 60s and 70s.
