The 76 virgins is a myth propogated by the corruption of people like Osama bin Laden and the psuedo-Islam of Al'Queda and Hamas.
Western ignorance of Islam buys wholly into it.
Suicide is a sin under Islamic law as is killing civilians and matyrdom doesn't exactly work on a ten-a-penny system.
But as is the case with all religion and dogma the corrupt who weild the power easily corrupt others.

According to some scholar (can't remember the name), this misconception results from a misinterpretation due to an archaic use of language in the relevant passage. According to him, martyrs are actually greeted with refreshments in the form of a selection of soft fruits. This is more in keeping with the cornucopia myth which was then common in the ancient world.
