Okay, so once again it was time for elections in my High School's SGA. And in high school, SGA really matter cuz of prom nite!!! Yet this year (w/the exception of ONE candidate) all the elected ppl were the "popular kids". Well me and my friends wont take this anymore; we've started an underground movement to overthrow these morons who were elected!!

Anybody care to help?

Anybody care to help?I am a "popular kid" at my own school, and I assure you, there is nothing you can do to stop us. If you disagree, please tell me how you think you could.

Ummmmm....no. You have no idea what populat people can do for prom night. They can do amazing things, and can be super good with money. And I wouldn't want these people to be overthrown, because I am somewhat....popular in my own school. I lost ASB elections, by only 15 votes.

If you disagree, please tell me how you think you could.

Three easy steps:

1) Stop caring (EDIT: about "popularity")
2) Graduate
3) Never look back.

It's that easy. (EDIT: It's especially easy when one learns as early as elementary school that "student government" is pointless and inconsequential and is only intended to create complacency and the illusion of control as the K-12 public daycare system becomes more and more authoritarian and inept.)

forget overthrowing the student government. just be subversive towards the entire institution in general. try organizing an underground school newspaper/zine or something.

we ran a candidate for student council with the slogan "bigger is better" - the dean was absolutely convinced that we were making a dick joke - and of course, we were - but our candidate also really was larger than his opponent.

Yeah right. In 8th grade (the yr before), some "popular" dumb@$$ got elected as president of SGA. He's the biggest jerk; care to hear me quote a part of his graduation speech?

We survived 9/11

And just so you know, NOBODY in my middle school was at the WTC on 9/11

I like this idea. But if the popular kids were elected, you gotta accept it. Me and my mate were voted head boy and head girl in our school by the kids, but because of our political activities the head of sixth form banned us from not only those posts, but even places on the senior prefect team.

John Locke argues that it is the people's right to overthrow a crappy government, and so do I

Who, like it or not are th electorate. What gives you the right to go against their will? You can claim precedent from Locke if you want, but what makes your view of what constitutes a "crappy" government more valid than the opinion of the rest of the electorate?

Is this John Locke's Thesis on School Governance? :D

As far as I can make out, it's a democratically elected government representing the wishes of the majority of the people, just not you. Perhaps you should shower more, then you might get elected too....

The rumour mill is always a good way to get majority to turn on the elected. Also, a good way, get in control of the paper and print anything and everting. This means, dig up any and all the dirt you can find on them. As long as it is in good taste...

If you're worried about censorship, them publish it outside of school and then distribute it on campus. They can't stop you as long as it doesn't disrupt the learning process. These are just one of your many rights as students.

Wouldn't it be better to enquire, if only briefly, into the policies which our good friend Superpower07 plans to pursue/encourage after the coup, before handing out general Machiavellian advice on subverting the democratic system willy-nilly?

Machiavellian advice??? I wont say and/or do everything just to keep power!!! I'm not even running; it's the leaders who are, but I assure you they'd defend the democratic way to their death (and so would I)

Well as I said before, the SGA mostly involves fundraising. So far our current admin arent doing a good enough job. But my two friends, the TRUE leaders of this coup, are the ones with the fundraising ideas. I'll tell you all of their policies.

And so, instead of taking these ideas to the ones who have been elected and thus helping out the cause which is being fundraised for, they keep these ideas to themselves until they seize power? Are personalities getting in the way of the fudnraising?

More news on page 3.

to be fair, in american school cliques, the 'popular' kids are roughly equivalent to the children whose parents are of the higher socio-economic class in the community - with some spill-over for poor kids good at football or basketball. they aren't popular in the standard sense; hell, they don't even really like each other. wanting to be 'popular' in high school is really a sort of class envy. the qualifications for entrance have nothing to do with whether you are likeable, and everything to do with your clothes and the size of your parents' house.

the reason the 'popular' kids get elected to all the student government positions is less to do with general popularity, and more to do with apathy or outright contempt from the other cliques. the 'popular' kids will stick together if challenged by candidates from outside the group (which is itself a rare event), while its hard to get the other cliques to even care. i know i didn't.
