1. Roseanne
2. Cheers
3. Friends
4. Seinfeld
5. Frasier

Number 1 because, well frankly it's the most hilarious show I have ever seen in my life.

Two for the same reason as number 1, almost.

Three, ditto.

Four, well imagine that, refer to number two.

Five, it's pretty good and I couldn't think of any other so yeah.

I would say I laugh at your foolish American Sitcoms, but I don't. Of all of those, Frasier is probably the best, I'd say, although I don't like any of them. Friends is phenomenally annoying.

Third rock from the Sun is the only decent sitcom to come out of the US, I reckon.

there is lots of "jewishness" in seinfeld. also, a lot of sitcoms today(esp. on fox) are full of jews.

simpsons-krusty the klown
Oliver Been-the entire been family
seinfeld-everyone
friends-monica/ross
arrested development-everyone
Will and Grace-everyone.

there are more ovbiously, but its just sooo many jews on TV today. its kinda like how in the 70's and 80's everyone on TV was black.

Did anyone watch "curb your enthusiasm?" Unfortunately here in Britian the best US sitcoms are out on the satelitte channels so I rarely get to see them. Other good ones were "Just Shooot Me" "Fraiser" and "Becker."

Although non of them compete with the classic British ones like "Red Dwarf" "Blackadder" and "Yes (Prime) Minister." ;)

Well, nothing competes with Red Dwarf and Blackadder. Except possibly Fawlty Towers.

And then, of course, there's Only Fools and Horses, Ab Fab, One Foot in the Grave, Porridge, Dad's army, The young ones, the league of gentlemen...

I always seemed to have a habit of missing the repeats of Yes Minister. Pity, since I've heard it's rather good.

Father Ted is fantastic also, although I'm not sure if it's british or irish.

Also, I've noticed much disagreement on the merits of Bottom, but I think it's great. I found this synopsis:
"Bottom" is about the lives of Richie Richard and Eddie Hitler who are a couple of rude, dirty, disgusting, nasty, anti-social losers. They are best buddies who do nothing but hang round their unhygienic flat insulting and hitting each other.
You can't go wrong with that premise, especially when it features Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson.

Sitcom denotes only theme and format, not medium. Thus, a sitcom can be filmed live or on tape, on stage or on location, or animated. Though, being animated creates it's own catagory, that does not exclude it from other catagories, specifically ones that are conserned with theme and not medium (though the end distribution medium must be TV)

Correct-Superfriends, while hilarious, was not intended as a sitcom, or literrally Situation Comedy, which are ultimatetly requisite more on the comedy part and not so much on the situation part (allowing, say, Sienfeld or Friendswhich are light on situation and supposedly heavier on comedy. I should have added intended audience, which is indicated by the dates-back-to-radio standard of prime time positioning. Superfriends aired on Satruday mornings (with Rubic the Amazing Cube and Dungeon & Dragons...in re-runs anyway) which is traditionally a programing block for children. Like the animation standard, though, this still isn't exclusive. Enter Saved by the Bell. It's still a sitcom with a different target audience. Superfriends misses the primary consideration (thematic intent, Superfriends was ment to be action, which allowed it to use the photon torpedo effect as a whipe...) that disqualifies it.

ah, smoke....makes run on sentences sooooo common....

1. Spaced
2. Yes Minister/Prime Minister
3. The Simpsons
4. Fawlty Towers
5. Red Dwarf ties with Black Books

No non-animated US comedy comes close to Britcoms. Except maybe Frasier slightly.

The current crop of comedians- Black Books/Spaced/Shaun of the Dead team are excellent.

British comedies have a different, darker and less appeal-to-the-greatest-demographic quality than US comedies.

I saw the US pilot for Red dwarf and it was awful. They screwed it up in some indefinable way.

American sitcoms tend to go for the blatant laughs. British sitcoms (especially the really good ones like Yes, Minister) go for a slightly subtler approach. Or the more modern ones (Spaced, Black Books) tend to have a slightly darker brand of humour.

I'm just hoping that they never make an American version of Spaced.

Oh yes. That was a well written and performed show. Bi-level action (jokes in both the foreground and background) is so hard to pull off from conception to realisation. And the characters where well defined and hillarious, even in the spazz character that I typically don't like, Mathew did eventually come off as pretty damn funny.
