Is It FUN To Injure Other People?

Why do some people enjoy beating/injuring or even killing other people for absolutely no reason?

Some months ago in my neighbourhood a group of people in their mid 30's were walking home along a street and were surprise-attacked with pepper-spray and metal bars. The attackers were a group of teens who didn't know their victims at all, and had absolutely no provocation nor reason to do this - they didn't even attempt robbery.

I realize this is not a new thing, but all my life I've wanted to interview someone who loves random violence and find out just why they feel the way they do.

Has anyone here ever met or talked to someone who preys on others "just for fun"? What makes them this way - any ideas here?

The psychologically harmful effects of hierarchy are one probable cause. If you are treated like dirt your entire life, you will have trouble learning how not to treat others badly.

Sadism is a very strange affliction. I'm not sure there's really an explanation someone could give you..from what I understand, it's more of a psychological thing.

Ive never been able to really hurt someone unless I had to in a fight, and even then I would have rather stayed out of it.

And what if you encounter a group of attackers who have more guns than you and shoot you dead before you can even draw yours?

I'm glad I live in a place with gun control. Violent teens here still have a relatively hard time acquiring guns, so their victims usually survive. If this same attack happened in the U.S., chances are the victims would be dead and the criminals escaped anyway. Guns solve nothing and just make society worse.

then i'd die with honor, and my ancestors would be proud of me. and anyways, the issue was teenagers, not with guns, but with metal pipes, and pepper spray

The truth of the matter is that it is not a question of fun at all, people are violent towards others out of an inherent weakness - be it ignorance, impotence, or some other deficiency that can seemingly be overcome by acting out as a bully. This is even seen on the international stage through the policies of certain countries that decide to use bombs instead of diplomacy - they would rather destroy others rather than sit down and try to settle their differences with people in a manner that does not cause blood to be shed.

When faced with all the messages that portray this cultural ideal of "toughness" and "might is right", is it any wonder that the youth of today are growing up as blood-thirsty hooligans? Simply take a look at the video games kids play: Doom, and all of the games that emulate heinous acts of violence - but that isn't enough - they soon want more. Seeing it in the movies and on TV isn't enough anymore - they need more. Instant gratification from the nonstop videostreams provided by the computers and all the other integrated media systems, stuffing their brains full of crap isn't enough. They want more.

So they turn to the real thing.

God forbid they should go read a book, turning off all of this crap for all of twenty minutes at a time.

Unplugged - connected to reality.
