Does president Palmer in 24 count?

Seriously, though, I think a black president is going to take a while longer. Maybe a female president is closer. So far there just seems to be white males as far as the eye can see.

Probably sooner than most expect. I mean, in the near future caucasians will be the minority, not blacks :) Sure, the hispanic and asian segments are probably more inclined to vote white, but seeing the bad job most white presidents have done it stands to reason that they wouldn't feel bad about giving a black president a day in court.

The three leading black canidates in the 2000 and 2004 interesting; Colin Powel would have been a strong canidate had he decided to run. Being widely acclaimed by both sides of the political spectrum to be at the very least a respected and admirable man. Carol Mosley Braun (sp?) Was a far weaker choice; her term in office was uneventful and gave little indication of leadership abilities. Al Sharpton was seen as a 'special intrest' vote and had little to reccoment himself to those outside his own supporters.

I firmly believe if we have a president of ANY minority demigraphic, it should be a choice based on the merits of the induvidual running. The way the press has handled the three mentioned here seems to be consistent with my conviction. Since there is really no question that there will be another qualified canidate who is black at some time in the future, I believe it is a matter of time.

Our country still has a lot of persistent problems with racial relations. A Black candidate from practically any party would most likely not make it in. I suspect however that it won't really matter much longer as signs of peak oil truly hitting us are begining to show up. So I suspect the days of the American Federal Empire are numbered.
