My rant was cheaper than therapy and far more therapeutic. It also had the side benefit of irritating you...it was a win-win-win scenario :!: :!:

Oh, I don't know. You're the one who felt the need to type all that out. I wasn't annoyed, just amused at your obvious inability to come up with arguments against the Senator and were reduced to cheap name calling like an irate 7 year old. Still, whatever floats your boat.

Being a member of the KKK kicks ass?
Do you have any policy disagreements with the Senator from West Virginia?
Yes, he was in the KKK. Is that enough?

Well, aside from the Klan affiliation from years past the guy is hurting the Left's cause. This should actually please me but I found his "performances" during the televised senate hearing on the Iraqi prision debacle very irritating. Only on the second day did he actually ask question of the sworn panel. On both days he took the time to read from his staffer notes (you could tell they weren't his) while he delivered the DNC talking points on the matter - and he did it without enthusiam...you know how all passion is lost when you've got to take the time to read the statements from a cue card.
The guy is weak sauce, he probably wouldn't be qualified to pump your gas much less be an active member of the senate. I bet he can burn a mean cross though :P

Byrd is my senator. He is revered, respected, and rightfully so. He's eclipsed the role of being a mere Senator to being a Statesman. He was a member of the KKK 70 years ago for an extremely brief period. Since that time he has been a champion of diversity, doing far more than any Republican has ever done. But, should we dredge up the past, should we talk about the deeds of a man from 70 years ago, or should we talk about the deeds of several prominent Republican Congressman from 30 years ago? Perhaps you would care to explore Trent Lott's past and compare? Or maybe, since the premise of the past making the person is important, we should discuss the doings of a certain resident of the White House?
Unless I am sorely mistaken, wasn't Robert Byrd's membership in the Ku Klux Klan about four months long?

Enough said.

You're mis-quoting.
"I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time."
-Robert Byrd
He was not being racist, he was refering to the semantics of the word '******'.
Even if he is a racist, he'd also be a hypocrite. He has done much more for minority civil rights in his life than most Democratic politicians. I think someone's actions tend to speak a lot more about their beliefs than their words.

Bob walks into a room at the local YMCA. He looks around, and finds an empty seat. A man is speaking from a podium:
"... the Elders of Zion! Which brings me back to the Papist conspiracy ..."
"Holy crap!" young Bobby shouts, rising from his seat, "This isn't a CPR class at all!"
"No, you want Room 4, down the hall."

First of all, thanks for being an ass in your response.
I didn't know about his KKK thing, I had only seen him speak eloquently and intellegently on the senate floor and thought he was a well considered person.
And, as people who have responded in the thread, it seems it still needs context. I appriciate that giving context and being an ass are two things that are hard to do together, but you dropped the one I was asking for...
Now a little story-
Once apon a time, Denny's refused service to African-American Secret Service agents, and as it turned out had a bit of a history of treating African-Americans. It was a smallish story, made the theme of a pretty cool Buckshot LeFunque song, and it passed.
So I was at a Denny's that had a poster lauding a program to help/promote/do something for the African-American community and I pointed and laughed and said to my friend, "'Yeah, see-we like black people...'"
But my friend straightened me on the subject in a compelling way-they have done something to change, to make up for the oversight. That is all we can ask-the complaint was leveled and they made an effort to make amends. If we don't recognize this, then how can we expect the change we demand? If the condemned remains condemned for thier actions after they have made the change then why change? So, I recinded my laughter at Denny's efforts.
If what the other posters, who seem more informed on the senator than I am, are saying is true, than Byrd falls into that catagory. It is unfortunate and regretable that he was in the klan. Not happy with that at all. However, if every thing he has done in the remaining 70 years has been contrary to that lack of judgment, then I'll go on the 70 years, and not the 4 months.
Context is everything. Being an ass is easy.

You also have to try to look at things thru the eyes of cultural realtivism. Yes, he may have been in the klan a long time ago. However, keep in mind that back then being in the klan was far more acceptable than it is today.
Judging him for being in the klan back in a time when the kkk was more acceptable against todays standards shows a lack of perspective.

Sounds like you think you could do things better. Perhaps you should run for Senate and show us all how things ought to be done.

So evil is okay, as long as everyone else (or at least, all the white people) is doing it? That kind of reasoning would justify slavery, the Holocaust, and the Crusades. Hell, let's just go to the Middle East, where terrorism is accepted! We'll have a grand old time!
Moral relativism is not moral.
The Gnomes said cultural relativism, not moral relativism. They are two different things. During the time he was a member, the K.K.K. was often percieved as more of a social club with a political agenda, and was often the only power in town (which, as a white male, you were expected to join).
That, and guilt by association doesn't work. Does the fact that he quit being a member of the K.K.K. after a very short period of time mean nothing?

You are a dumbass! Yes Conrade, but Claudio still married Hero and you got busted by Dogberry.
And a shiny new dime to whoever can get that reference--in all fairness, Conrade did only say "You are an ass!" and he said it only once, but hey, I'm trying to lighten the mood here.
