Sir Ernest Rutherford by all means. Hillary may have ocnquered Mt. Everest but Rutherford's contribution to the human race is by far of greater achieveemnt and importance.

Brashy's only a political leader. Most of the leaders of the arts and politics are often forgotten by the next generation, so don't even bother.

Another two great Kiwis I have in mind (paying closer attention to my militarist within) are Lt. Gen. Sir Bernard Freyberg V.C. and Capt. Charles Upham V.C. and Bar*. If you are grateful of your freedoms, thank the heroic veteran, otherwise you'd be working as a bloody sushi maker! (As a person of Chinese descent, I have every right to say that.)

Kia ora tatau,

In response to the earlier question NZ's population is 4 million. We turned 4 million early this year. My nomination for for greatest NZer is Te Whiti of Parihaka who helped invent non-violent protest a century before Ghandi. Another possibility could include Kate Sheppard for campaigning to give women the vote - first country in the world.

Women got the vote via an election bribe, and everyone makes such a big deal of it.

You know, you wouldn't be allowed to nominate Te Whiti because our government is so ashamed of what happened at Parihaka. For greatest Maori of all time I think I'd nominate Prince Tui Teka. 8)

Oh, and to Sino and his science obsession: Don't forget Richard Pearse. The first man to achieve powered flight, nine months before the Wright Brothers achieved the first CONTROLLED powered flight...

Te Whiti by all means. Suffrage is futile so Sheppard, I somewhat disagree. But undoubtedly a social pioneer for women's rights. I may not fully agree with democracy but if men were allowed the vote, so should women.
