I just got my first tattoo, and I think I am already addicted...I can't wait to get another!

I'm going out to the pub to celebrate, but I thought I would put up a thread asking people about their tattoos, and/or cool tattooing and piercing stories. Anybody have horror stories, now that it's too late to talk me out of it?

Yay, tattoo. Kick ass.

You people will be disgusting when you are old and wrinkly. I would just stick with the piercing. That's not permanant.

Yeah, they can do that to you. I've got one on my upper arm (a black phoenix of my own design and style), but I've curbed my desire to get another one til I get the design just right. It has to be mine, and it has to be something I can live with forever. I've decided my next will be a cheshire cat to represent my psychology interests, I just have to settle on what I want it to look like. The cat from American McGee's Alice is the frontrunner.

What does yours look like? I love comparing ink...

Indeed, and besides, all that can be avoided with right placement of the tat. Simply, colors fade, so I keep that to a minimum, and I avoid the parts that stretch with age. I'd love a face tat, but that's none too practical for the work I want to do.

actually, mine is on my inner arm, which pretty much won't wrinkle until i am way too old to care how i look.

and why does it not surprise me that Anbar has a totally kickass original design inked on him? you were already too cool, man, you gotta tone it down...the rest of the world will be jealous :).

as for the other questions, i got a quotation from Michaelangelo (the artist, not the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle) that means (roughly) "i am still learning," in a font that i modified myself. i don't understand why anybody would just pick one of the designs in the books or off the wall in the parlor; that's not even pretending to be unique, and what happens when you meet somebody with your same tattoo? it's like showing up at a dance to find another girl in your same dress, only worse because you can never take off the dress.

i already have 3 piercings (two cartilage and my tongue) and i used to have a nose and an eyebrow but i let them close up so i could apply for a really nice job. i love getting piercings, and i have wanted this tat for sooooooooooo long. it's really poetic for me because i graduate college this Sunday, so getting this particular tat has extra meaning for me.

when i was sitting in the waiting room my heart was pounding so hard i couldn't believe it. i have always gotten a rush from getting piercings, but this was a hundred times more because i knew it was permanent. once he started the inking i was surprised because it felt almost exactly like i expected...i know that doesn't sound like it makes much sense, but it did in my head. i was most surprised that it only hurt when he was actually doing the tattooing, and as soon as he stopped the pain was totally gone. it itched a little afterwards but didn't hurt a bit; i was expecting more discomfort.

it's really a problem for me that i am getting hooked on this stuff, because it's way too expensive a hobby!

College again? Don't you already have, if I remember correctly, three degrees? That's really impressive!

Anyway, do people have pictures of their tatoos they can post here? I'd like to see some of them!

As far as I can tell, only two things can break the addiction--being broke as hell and not having someone you can trust. I stopped at two for the first reason, and I've stayed at two because the guy who did them dies in a car accident. I'm in San Francisco now and you know there's got to be some major artists here, but I can't bring myself to go check any of them out because I just don't have the trust level anymore.

Great quote, and good placement for it. How long did it take, and what kind of font is it similar to?

Heh, I'll see if I can get it uploaded somehow, it turned out really nicely (although apparently my skin shugs off ink way too easily). I'd have others but, well, cost and perfectionism are in my way.

i don't understand why anybody would just pick one of the designs in the books or off the wall in the parlor; that's not even pretending to be unique, and what happens when you meet somebody with your same tattoo? it's like showing up at a dance to find another girl in your same dress, only worse because you can never take off the dress.

I've never understood that either...one of my more extensively-tattooed friends summed it up as, "Nothing really lets you feel like you own your body like making a permanent and personal change to it." I agree, so I really don't see why someone would want to just grab one of the wall designs. Especially in the case of the trendy Asian characters, which some people are finding out don't mean what they thought they did.

Hmm, sounds interesting, what's the job? I'll be graduating in about a month (thank-you trimester system), then heading for L.A. to resume research work. Since tats are more expensive in L.A., I need to get my ink done near home before I go, so there's a bit of pressure there to get what I want done now. I've already got all the piercings I want - 2 left ear, 1 labret (although I know that tongue piercings are fun to play with).

it's really a problem for me that i am getting hooked on this stuff, because it's way too expensive a hobby!

Yeah, it really is. A couple of my friends are walking canvases. I envy them, but I can't afford to even try to compete right now.

Still, it's very compelling...

I have a design of a similar layout that I drew up last summer, but since it was mostly filler (all design, no deeper meaning) I put it on the back burner.

it's pretty small (since it's on the inside of my arm and, well, i am pretty small) and the font i guess is a little like the font you usually see old latin quotes in. but i changed it to be less ornate and heavy, 'cause i don't want my arm to look like it belongs to a Goth.

wow, that's a great way to put it...i certainly do have a new sense of my body and how much power i have over it. and LORD i am sick of the asian characters thing!!! i went out to the pub last night to celebrate and like 5 guys there had characters tattooed some place on themselves. i swear they all had the same freaking one, but said it meant something different.

it's just for the summer, a working internship at a legal firm, and they coordinate all sorts of legal stuff for a bunch of non-profit organizations. stuff like getting the permits to march for things. since i would be working with their clients a lot they said they needed me to maintain a certain level of professionality, and i totally agree. fortunately my new ink can be covered by a wide-banded watch or a shirt sleeve, so i don't have to worry about that.

I've got the tiny little bit in my ear pierced, the wee lump that sticks out and feels quite solid. It is really painful to get done, like.
I didn't cry, but my body writhed with agony and my face twisted like i'd just eaten a bad lemon. It took my piercer about 4 minutes to try and ram this needle through the cartilage bit while my friend made conversation with him, making me rather nervous, not to mention the big poster he has in his studio with a picture of his metal head and in thick black letters -
DO NOT TRUST THIS MAN.

I also have the classic Madonna, which was quick and painless, though i left all my stuff in the studio and stood outside the shop in a daze for five minutes, feeling ill. Luckily a nice woman came out with my stuff and talked to me for a while. It bleeds quite heavily when you just get it.

I also have another four piercings in my ear and da belly!

I would quite like a tattoo, but i'm going to wait a while and see if i really want it done. I would want to design it and have a few ideas but am not set yet.

Bottle..it's important to remember when you get tats hun that they should not overwhelm the natural form of the body...some of the guys I know with tats over all their body like some might have here in my opinion forget how beautfiul the human body is..tattos shouldn't cover it but compliment it....on females it must be my bias but I prefer smaller ones, sleeker, leaner, sexy or cute..nothing so ostentatious....but when I was on R&R in Tokyo Japan I met a Yakuza...course their tattos are symbolic over which criminal clan they belong too and they can cover their entire chest, back , and arms.

that's a very good point, and it's what stopped me from adding to my piercing collection...i realized that there weren't any other places i expecially wanted to pierce, and i didn't want to just add metal to my facial ones. i didn't want to be a bunch of piercings with a person under them, and i try to remind myself that i will probably feel the same way about tattoos once this initial high wears off. this will definitely be my only "visible" tattoo, since any others i might get will be on my back or someplace where they won't normally be seen. this one is much more high-visibility, and it's the only such that i would really want.

my friend made a very interesting point when we were on our way to get inked: "Some people get really fancy, eye-catching designes on places that they won't actually see...it's like they are getting the tattoo for other people to look at. But some people get tattoos in areas that they keep covered, so the tat is mostly just for them. I think that says a lot about the person."

our tattooist had the following to say when we told him about our conversation: "You would not believe the number of lame, rainbow-colored fairy/butterfly things i have penned on the lower backs of teenage attention whores. Those chicks think guys won't be looking at their asses enough, so they put in tats that are pretty much just symbolic signs for 'LOOK AT MY BUTT!! PLEASE!!!'"
