NEW ZEALAND SHOULD JOIN THE FEDERATION

I believe that New Zealand should join the Federated states of Australia.

What do others think?

Nah, we would only have to put them in another exclusion zone, those dreadful refugees are occassionally welcomed there. (They took quite a few from the infamous Tampa).

Well has anyone ever considered how convienient New Zealand would be for Australia to transport prisoners?

No more jails in Australia...just transport em all across the Tasman.

There was an article in The Weekend Australian just over a year ago commenting on just that. And the conclusion was "Why bother", since NZ and Oz have an open market and free movement of labour anyway.

How should I know? I'm a Pom!

It would be the death of too many international sporting events.

It's not going to happen- NZ is a sovereign country, and anyone in NZ who wants to be part of Australia has already moved there.

Besides, it's useful to have a small, inoffensive country at the bottom of the world...

Oh, and just to be really pedantic: Australia is a Commonwealth, not a federation. 8)

I am reminded of the time that the then Prime Minister of New Zealand, David Lange, was asked if he was concerned that so many New Zealanders were moving to Australia.

His reply : "Not at all, it raises the I.Q. in both nations".

Either way its very funny. As a Brit (Pom) I have no opinion on this matter as I am so far away and don't know how NZ and AUS relate to each other!

However, I would hope that they don't. Aussies are IMO the equivalent of Glaswegians and New Zealanders would be more Edinburgh types. They wouldn't mix very well.

The Australian Constitution actually allows for the event that New Zealand would join the Federation.

Since Australia did own New Zealand at one stage, I see no reason as to why we cannot claim it as our own.

One of the wealthiest men in the colony of NSW actually purchased New Zealand. Of course, that didn't last long after the Crown found out!

So technically Australia has claim to New Zealand.

Well, we already own their banks, their airlines, and their Navy...so really all that is left is for the New Zealand Parliament to sign the country over.

The USA is a federation too. Any nation that has self governing states forming a union, is one.

As was the former Soviet Union.

Why stop at Australia and NZ? I propose the unification of all nations into a single entity thus ending all poverty, war, economic competition and all other ills of the current world structure. With the world united our potential would be limitless and we would be able to conquer space in no time at all (ster trek styles).
Of course the unification of value systems must come before the unification of political systems for this to have any success at all, and who knows, a couple of hundred year and a few major wars/global catastrophies and we may all finally unite, not under national banners but as citizens of the world.

In the meantime however I would like to voice my opposition to any unification with Australia despite our "shared heritage", I mean would Canadians want to join the US? I think not...

League and Netball would be a pointless exercise because besides the occasional match against the poms, there's no other real challenge for either country.

Combining the 1st and 3rd best one day cricket teams in the world? hmmm....

as for rugby, I doubt either country could decide on a combined team :P

Oh I don't know... I've always thought you get the polititicians you deserve - and certainly the Aussies could do with a good dose of Helen Clark! Why, lashings of feminist, bleeding liberal, left leaning, hairy under-arm, gay rights advocating, cynical, sniveling, halitostically opressed and downright fashion-challenged-ness would do you all the world of good! Good things about NZ:

Nice scenery
Friendly People
Fair Gun Laws
Good Hunting & Fishing
Excellent Fish & Chips and Meat Pies
DB Export Gold Beer
Tasty Chocolate & Confectionary

Bad Things about NZ:

Worthless currency
Maoris claiming the entire country
Tree-Hugging Hippies
Cold Weather
No Jobs
Crap Pay
Miles from anywhere
Political Correctness gone mad
Sheep Jokes
Pretty much everything else

And I used to live in NZ, until I realised Australia was a much better place to live and promptly shifted. Never looked back, either. And having escaped from NZ, I really don't want it becoming part of Australia. Then everyone will move here and I'll be right back where I was before I left NZ. :D
