I'm asking the conservatives on this board... who do you think we should nominate in 2008 to fight the inevitable Democratic Candidates Hillary and Bill Clinton?

Jeb Bush maybe?

I really really hope Hillary doesn't run in 08. Besides, when Kerry wins in 04, he'll be the Dem candidate! And I'd be just fine with Kerry for 4 additional years.

*looks around, sees all the conservatives*

*runs like hell*

I really, really want to see Rudy Gulliani out there, running for President.

If he were to run in the Republican primaries, I would join his campaign, even if he were running against Jeb Bush.

Wow...of my 5 top choices, 3 are African-American. I guess the GOP really hates them, right, Libs? All it proves is that you like african-american republicans. Good for you. Of the three you named, only one has ever been elected to any office, and he was a congressional representative. Anyone remember the last President elected whose last elected experience was in the House? James Garfield--Kucinich made a big deal of that in the early debates.

Which isn't to say that any of the three wouldn't be viable candidates--I happen to think that both Powell and Rice are so damaged by the Iraq problems that they'd have difficulty getting past them, but JC Watts' only real problem is a lack of name recognition. That, and the fact that he'd have to win somewhere other than the deep south.

I'm not saying that the Republican party as a whole is racist--it isn't. But the fact is that in the south, the racist element generally tends to vote Republican, and even if they only make up 5-10% of the electorate, if they stay home or vote for a third party "Dixiecrat" type, those states swing to the Democrats. It's sad, and it makes me feel bad for my native south, but it's currently the truth. I hope it eventually changes to the point where the racists are so marginalized politically that there's no reason to pander to them, but for now, they're a force in southern politics.

If he ran with bush instead of Cheney in '04, it would SEAL the election this November!

Here's the difference, though. There's a good chunk of the progressives who are willing to say, as I do, that Kerry's not the best guy for the job on our issues, but he'll give us a shot, and Bush won't even do that much, so we've got to support Kerry.

But abortion is a much more ideologically pure issue for a lot of people. There are a lot of people for whom it's a deal-breaker, and I can see a depressed turnout among pro-life advocates who might feel betrayed by their party if they nominated Giuliani, mainly because that would set up a pro-choice person as the favorite for the nomination in 2008 (assuming Bush won in 2004, which isn't a certainty).

Politically, I have to say that I think it would be good for the Republican party as a whole to nominate the guy, but the abortion issue is a major one for a lot of Republican voters, and you chance a major defection over it.

always with the jeb I hear him alot when this debate is brought up. I'd like to run for office not nescessarily this office but local or something.

I'd like to see some real conservatives run ones who are very strongly fiscally conservative and none of this big government stuff we currently have. i want what the GOp promised/promises: small government, low tax if any, and so on we don't have that with any. Ron paul is a likeable guy

I happen to be a pro life wing of the party but I am not against gay marriage I am fairly loosend up on drugs (pot anyway) and so on really my only truly conservative stance (not personally, personally I am very socially conservative) is against abortion I find it to be murder. I dunno who to support next time bush will do for now but next time?

Amend the constitution, let's have Arnold Schawrzenegger in 2008!

He's the only candidate I guarantee Hilary can't beat.

But realistically... Powell, he's decently Conservative, and he's done just enough pandering to Liberals to get some swing votes.

Condi Rice

Possible, but she'd lose in the South. Her lack of experience in elected office would hurt her; her testimony in front of the 9/11 commission would hurt her more. Her evasions, replayed on TV, would damn her.

Colin Powell

Refuses to run. His wife won't let him, and if he runs his role in the coverup of My Lai will be dragged through the press. He used to be my childhood hero... I might even consider voting for him. It'll never happen, though.

Rudy Giuliani

Pro-choice, gay-neutral. Not in a million years. A VP, maybe, but never President on a Republican ticket.

Jeb Bush

Quite probable, sadly. He'd carry Florida, despite his serious mismanagement of that state, and he has the Bush family connections to help.

JC Watts

He'd lose the South (he's decently popular in the North), no name recognition. Nope.
