Football is a stupid sport.

Stupid sport?.. A uniquely American sport..everything else we've assimilated from somewhere else practically...nothing finer then having a 300lb tackle maul a running back catching him in midair as he accepts a pass from a quarterback.....

As for the pads things...we want to keep our players around a little longer then rugby with no pads..if some of our tackles managed a hit on a rugby quarterback with no pads to protect him..the quarterback would be either kneecapped, a concussion and out for the game or a broken sternum.

American football and American hockey are gladiatorial games at their finest...

There is no such position as 'quarterback' in rugby. If you threw a pass in rugby to someone who is obviously going to get tackled as soon as they get the ball (like american football) its called a 'hospital pass' for good reason. It's not something you would do.

Also, the style of tackling is quite different in rugby. Pads in [American] football not only protect the tackled player, but the one doing the tackle; attempt a football style tackle without pads, and you're liable to wreck your shoulder pretty quick.

Tackling in rugby (unless you're Jerry Collins) is usually with the aim of getting back on your feet and trying to turn over the ball, as opposed to just smashing them, doing a little dance and standing around for 10 minutes...

Not assimilated from some where? Never watched a game of Rugy League then?
Not that American football is bad, it has evolved into a very different game. I prefer both types of Rugby as they a faster but that's me. If you like it then great.

You need to learn a little bit about sports history. American football evolved directly from rugby, and arrived in the US via the gold rushes of the 19th century. Ice hockey came from the UK.

So sorry, both have been assimilated from elsewhere. Lacrosse is really the only truly American sport there is, as it was first played by the Native Americans. Or basketball, but it really sucks.

Enter the great mediator.

I've played both rugby and football on a competitive level (club rugby at my university, and high school football), and neither one is more violent or more skilled than the other. In rugby, you're more liable to hurt yourself because you're unprotected, but as a result, the hits are more tame than in football. In football, since you're armored up like a knight, you have the freedom to try and decapitate someone on every hit, since neither you or he is going to take the full brunt of the hit. The pace of the game is also very different. Rugby is alot like soccer in that the action never stops. You're running around until there's a score. But, because it's more about endurance than speed, rugby is slower than football. And in football, since you do have 30+ seconds between each play usually, the pace of play during plays is alot faster. It can be a blur sometimes with the speed people move, because everyone is so well rested inbetween plays. Plus, you're only on the field for half the time in football, so you're even more rested, whereas you spend most of the game playing in rugby.

I'm just trying to do my part to stem the inevitable football vs. rugby fight. If anyone else wants to hear my comparisons between football and rugby pertaining to other aspects of the game, let me know.

exactly!
usually the best passer of the ball in a rugby team is the scrum half, but the key thing to rugby is that every man on a team has to be able to pass the ball well.
people talk about American footballers taking big hits, which is true but only because they wear the padding and because the ball is passed forward, whereas in rugby the ball has to be passed backwards or a penalty results.
Rugby is a superior game imho, American football is not a gladitorial sport by any means, and our game of hurlin here in ireland is the fastes field game on the planet, faster than lacrosse, nearly as fast as ice hockey, and once again, coz we're so tough, no padding!

Had you called it "real football" then anyone who knows a thing about sports would know you meant what us Americans call "soccer". If you called it "American football" then anyone who knows a thing about sports would know you meant what us Americans call "football". Just calling it "football" confuses us Americans, especially the ones who don't know a thing about sports and only think there is one kind of football.

And whats with all of the pads?

And whats with all of the pads?

No action?..HAH...next time I see Peyton Manning throw for 50 yrs, a perfect spiral to land in the arms of his running back...or I see the crunch of a noseguard as he goes THRU the center to slam the quarterback..you see..a majority of us Americans LIKE to see the tackle..with pads you get to really cause max hurt but not take the man out...that would make a pro team owner very upset if he was to lose his 30 million dollar quarterback. What is the thrill in watching a man pass BACKWARDS a few yards?...when you can see it sail for dozens of yards in front of him to a running back not knowing if it'll be caught or intercepted for a 50 yrd runback?

You see..with no pads you don't get that "crack" of body on body..one good hit and your tackle may hurt his shoulder...the man with the ball may be out with a broke rib...no more playing...no..we want our players to constantly go out there and get hurt..and then there is that tap dancing over the quarterback after a successul tackle..oh yeah..."Show me the MONEY baby"..

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not defending soccer or rugby. I have come to the firmly held belief that no man can play a ball sport without becoming:

a. Increasingly violent, regressing to an almost animal stage, while body mass doubles

or...

b. Increasingly up-his-own-arse, growing long, flowing locks and diving on the ground shouting "Ref!" at the slightest touch of his body.

And you could throw pads on a rugby team and they'd last two minutes against a football team. They're completely different games. There's no use comparing them.

No if any country can claim Basketball it would be Mexico (or others?), it was of central American origin after all.
