the real reason for the Iraqi abuse

I think the real reason can not be narrowed down to just the army or even the government.

its the way our whole (American) culture treats the imprisioned. its terrible, the way we just accept the fact that prisoners will be assulted mentaly, phsicaly and all too often sexualy. I'm disgusted by this, this is perhaps the worst part of our nation.

and ironicaly it is perhaps, besides puppies, the most bi-partisan issue ever. every American politician should have the same aggenda for this issue and push it forward. why isn't this happening?

remember, human rights start at home. (though regime change doesn't)

We treat our criminals like puppies within the U.S., it's almost too much. Three meals per day, approved by a nutritionist, cable t.v., unlimited phone time in female prisons during free time, access to books, schooling and vocational training, "conjugal" visits, visits from family, fully equipped gyms, sports fields, etc. Look at the suicide rate in French prisons, for example. Ours have it easy compared to much of the world. The Iraqi prisoner abuse is just plain bad leadership.

Not only that, but we tend to put people in prison for longer than most nations (at least, Western nations), yet there is a public perception that our penal system is "just a slap on the wrist." My criminal law professor was fond of saying, "You go spend fifteen to twenty-five years in prison, and come away seeing if it's just your wrist that hurts."

We also put people in prison for things like prostitution and recreational drug use.

There is no "reason" for torturing or mistreating prisoners.
As for the argument that prisoners are "spolit" in some way, it should be remebered that the punishment for prisoners is to be imprisoned - the deprivation of their liberty is their punishment.
They are not sent to prison in order to be subjected to further punishments while incarcerated. If anything, they should be given opportunities and motivation for rehabilitation. If they can be rehabilitated (and, of course, some cannot) then both they and scoiety gain overall.
