Communism does work, if done well. unfortunately, it is also inherently near-impossible to DO well. the only true communism that has ever worked was the Native Americans. the problem lies in that it fails to factor in basic human emotions, like greed. if one man works hard, he gets the same as the guy who does nothing. so he does nothing, too. then everyone else follows suit. also, in, say the Soviet Union, it could not possibly be equal if the gavernment lives in an opulent palace (kremlin) while the peasents live in a shack. effectively, a perfect system, made for a perfect world. too bad this world just ain't perfect.

except that it doesn't fail in that respect at all. the mere existence of the possibility of free riding does not disallow some form of sanctions against people who free ride beyond what others are willing to allow. and if too many people try to free ride then there is nothing to distribute anyways, so free riding has no benefit. and, of course, there are other rewards beyond material goods that people tend to value more anyways.

Human beings are flawed, the reason capitalism suceeds so much because it exploits and uses those flaws to work. But after awhile, society becomes too flawed and it falls apart. Then some sort of communistic system comes up, it doesn't work and the system crashes. People return to capitalism, and the cycle continues.
