Personally I'm worried about these two dates. In 2009 the Freedom Tower will be complete and in 2013 the WTC complex will be finished. Are we possibly facing an attack of greater-than-before proportions on these two days? It just scares me

I think the Freedom Tower will probably be pretty resistant. If they wanted to damage, I'd imagine they'd hit it during construction.

Although if the people do a good job construction the Towers and the complex, a terrorist attack shouldn't be a worry. Attacking the WTC site again would be a bit of terrorist grandstanding, Bin Laden's, although delusional, is also at the same time quite smart in an evil sort of way, and these operations take quite a while to plan and get the resources for. I doubt he would "waste" terrorists on a hopeless plan.

I don't personally think we have to much to worry about. With all the steps taken to prevent such acts now, it is doubtful they will be able to get past the airport security. And by then, all unidentified aircraft in the US will probably get shot down anyway! :shock:

I think our airport security is VERY shaky... if a college kid could get stuff past security to prove a point, we have a LOT of work to do to prevent another 9/11-esque attack.

On 2-26-93 they used a Ryder truck. On 9-11-01, jets. Next time it will be something else.

I think NYC is due for a hit between now and election day. It will come when we least expect it, how we least expect it, in a place we least expect it. When the guard has the day off.

There's always a possibility but we shouldn't constantly live in fear. I'm sure Pearl Harbor scared the hell out of people and they were probably expecting a repeat attack, but nothing happened.

Actually it is extremely plausable. There are many ready to go devices floating around since the USSR closed shop. Additionally there is a load of "unaccounted for" plutonium floating around. It is interesting to hear in security circles that they do not have the capacity for a full blown nuke, but the danger of a small, localized (relatively speaking) dirty bomb is easy enough to accomplish.

The kid is not the point. He is illustrative of how permeable security screening is. If he can do it what about an trained, determined group with deadly intent?

Never underestimate your enemy's ability or his determination. Soon after the 2-26-93 WTC attack our initial shock turned to derision. The WTC became a shining example of adequate security. Underground public parking was eliminated. The raised deck plates and balustrades were strong enough to stop a speeding truck. 'S' turns were added to the entries and exits. Heavy planters 10' in diameter and 4' deep formed a further deterrent at all other potential access points. State of the art lighting, ventilation and evacuation materials were installed on the interior. The enemy adapted tactics to render all these preparations irrelevant.

We go through airport security and they make a grand show of it all. Shoes are removed, objects are double checked, metal is detected, granny's nailfile and knitting needles are confiscated. The public is made to feel safe. But really we are far, far behind the curve.

You don't need to be Special Forces or an ex-con to know nylon monofilament garrotes, honed plastic cards or bag bottoms, toothbrushes with embedded safety razors, zippers, on and on and on are deadly weapons in trained determined hands. What will a pilot do when crew and passengers are being killed? Will he call in an airstrike or will he surrender his craft? Will a flight attendant be coerced into gaining access to the cockpit?

The government can't stop the flow of drugs into this country. That "war" has been going on since Richard Nixon declared in in 1971. The government can't even stop cons, in maximum security, from having weapons. Why should we trust that they have the airports, which are much less controlled than a prison, free from security lapses and breeches?

And, to be fair, the Mayan's didn't exactly say what would happen, we just sort of infer that it's a doomsday event since the calender runs out.

I'm ignoring the priest comment because the last thing we need is to turn this into another religious free-for-all thread. :D

We have nothing to fear except nuclear war with Russia or China.

Even a small nuke wont do much damage in a modern urban city.
