TOTALITARIANISM - COULD THERE EVER BE A FEMALE DICTATOR?

07-05-2004, 09:03
Well it is interesting how we always hear about warmongering men and how we seek to solve everything with fists (not really a bad solution - I mean just look at Iraq and what a great job we are all doing).

But...

What about warmongering women?

Throughout history we have had some pretty awful female leaders that made men appear weak and who ruled quite forcefully:

1. Boudica
2. Cleopatra
3. Hatshepsut
4. Queen Mary
5. Agrippina the elder and younger

(any more just mention them - no Thatcher doesn't count because she doesn't qualify a a warmongering woman)

I wonder if there are any or will be any more women who cause trouble (nagging houswives excluded  ) for society. I wonder if women could possibly lead us into a third world war?

Is the modern woman capable of war...or are women today too feminised and adverse to violence?

I think that the sheer force in which menopause comes in, they would have enough strength to take down al-Qaeda.... ;)

I disagree with you about Thatcher....

She waged war to win an election. Was very pro 'peace through firepower' as well...

Interestingly many of the Americans posing with their Iraqi friends in the recent prison photos are women. I wonder if they can use PMS as an excuse in military court...

Of course there can be. And there will be. I am sure of that.

PMS is a powerful ally... and a powerful enemy. For both parties involved.

Hillary's going to run and win in 2008, I'll bet on it..What is really scary is she is one Democrat that I would even consider voting for. More than I can say for any of the males they have offered in the 28 years (since I have been old enough to vote).

Wrong. She didn't start the war, Argentine did. Maggie just won it.

Go read a history book!

Catherine the Great, The Dowager Empress of China, "Bloody Mary" and her successor Elizabeth 1 of England, all come to find fairly easily.

I don't doubt that women can be as oppressive as men.

Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher, Indira Ghandi were thrown up by democratic processes, but IMHO were disasters for their nations.

A woman ruler would be refreshing and fairly interesting i'm sure. She had better be an upbeat funky woman who sees why we shouldn't have to pay v.a.t on sanitary products, and legalise abortion in all states (birth rate will decline-nae unprepared, unwanting child-mothers).
I also reckon wifies around the world would feel a lot safer with a female president, though we would probably get more pissed off if she did something 'wrong' (invading/colonating countries, wasting billions on shiny tanks and T.N.T, ecetera), being the first representative of the female race in the most powerful position on Earth.
Any sane woman in the presidency who does not believe herself to be the Terminator will hold more of my trust than any blokes i've seen standing on the box in my lifetime.

Women are ruthless enough without giving them political power. I say eliminate sufferage and return the world to peace!

4. Queen Mary
5. Agrippina the elder and younger

Er, Agrippina the elder? Wasn't she wife of Germanicus and therefore never even an empress? Apologies, my knowledge is somewhat flavoured by I, Claudius, but I'm pretty sure only one Agrippina acted as a dictator.

There have been many female 'powers behind the throne'; Messalina springs to mind.

Also - Catherine the Great of Russia should be in the list.

Where's Queen Victoria of England on the list?
Firina

Victoria was the Head of State of a vast empire, but she didn't control it; she wasn't a dictator.

Nor was the British Empire, let alone the UK, totalitarian.

Germanicus was heir to the throne at one stage and his wife exerted immense influence.

Yes Messalina was rather nasty...don't forget Poppea either.

And then there is Helen Clarke...PM of New Zealand
