Who is the greatest Canadian?

In honour of the CBC's Greatest Canadian contest thing, who do you think is the greatest Canadian ever?

As a Manitoban, and a true Canadian history nerd, I think I would have to say Louis Riel. Myabe he was a bit nutty, but he help the Metis people gain their independance, as well as form the province of Manitoba. Canada's East and West have been divided since the execution of Riel, and I think he was a truely great man.

Seconded.

He defined us as a people. He was the most influential Canadian in history. We are who we are because of him. Like him or hate him. It's a fact!

When Trudeau dies, i cried, even though I am far to young to have experianced his leadership. I just read all the things about him, and it's sad that there does not seem to be any charismatic politicians like him anymore. I mean, come on, his wife partied witht the Rolling Stones!

Was there any one Maggie didn't party with? LOL

I remember when he was our Prime Minister. I recall watching on TV as he and the Queen signed us away from the UK. It was one of the most moving things I recall about my childhood. Trudeau and my father (who has also passed away) gave me my love of politics. Trudeau was the heart of this beautiful country. I'm not sure we will ever see another man like him again. :(

"…for those of us who were there when Pierre Trudeau was prime minister it was the magic of the man that is etched and cherished in the mind's eye. We embraced his diamond-sharp intellect, his irreverence, and the style of his leadership and life.

I'm going to have to go with Red Green on this one, guys! LOL Seriously, though, I would say most likely Pierrre Trudeau or John A. Yeah, John A might not have been the best looking of world leaders, but he really did do a great role in making Canada and Canadians everywhere who they/we are today. And Trudeau, well, he helped to usher in Canada to moderisation and broadened cultural horizons for so many people. He gave Canada it's Charter, it's Bill of Rights and institutionalised official Bilingualism. Which may or may not be a great thing, depending on where you stand. But there you have it. Either Trudeau or MacDonald. Greatest Canadian of All Time.

March 1977: The most famous Stones orgy of them all, when the band made a surprise and rare club appearance at the legendary El Mocambo with April Wine as opening act. (Several tunes made it to the Love You Live double album.) Keith was busted for drugs by the Mounties, and Margaret Trudeau had left her PM hubby and partied notoriously with the boys.

Trudeau was indeed very defining for Canada. A little of a bitch about his constitution thingy, especially for those of us from Quebec, but overall a very good political leader.

We've come a great way to Paul Martin, haven't we? And I mean that in a negative way...

Also, I'd call René Lévesque a great Québécois, but as far as Canada goes...

The Greatest Canadian should be someone who has contributed to Canada and helped make it what it is today.

Tommy Douglas did that. When you ask an American about Canada, one of the things she/he's likely to say is "health care." It's a part of our identity.
