We need your help. Hubby and I are quitting work, selling the house, cars etc to go travelling for a couple of years. We will have £25,000 to spend (that leaves plenty for a deposit on a house when we come back). We want to start in Australia and are keen to find out about the sights around the globe that are unmissable on this once-in-a-lifetime-trip. We would like to hear any suggestions that you may have. Thank you ever so much.

it may seem a huge chiche but the grand canyon is really worth seeing. not only that but the whole area north of the grand canyon in the national parks of Utah is worth whatever time you could spare to see them. there is a road through zion national park that has got to be the most dangerous road on earth because you cant help but gawk at the incredible scenery as you try to maneuver your car down the winding mountain road.

Japan: Kyoto is worth a look, but going downhill. Nara is much better, IMHO. Many other worthwhile sites here. :D

The Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland*
*We will gloss over the fact that Doctor Johnson described it as being "worth seeing, but not worth going to see".

Singapore (not for the sights but for the food- since you're starting in Australia you'll probably fly through there anyway)
Are you more interested in historical sights or contemporary stuff (e.g. safaris and the like)? I prefer historical stuff so here's my spin on it
India: The Taj Mahal, the various palaces in the princely states, theres too much to describe
Egypt: Pretty much all of the old pharoanic ruins.
Europe: Try taking a train from Naples to Amsterdam or Paris. You'll see a lot of lovely scenery and you can stop off along the way to see the many sights
The UK: Best viewed in summer. When the sun is out, England can be the most beautiful country on earth (not for sheer grandeur but in a homely comfortable way)
I'll let someone else take over the Western hemisphere but I'll add this: San francisco is really lovely.
Statue of Liberty is a pretty hard sight to miss
I'd recommend Las Vegas if you consider that a sight
oh, Victoria Falls in Zambia is a nice one
and the Taj Mahal in India

Apparently it is one of the busiest tourist places in Northern Europe.
Think about it, where else can you see tackiness compresses to critical mass.
