Price of Petrol

I read a thread a while back that had somebody from the US complaining about the price of petrol but I can't find it now!

Anyway, here are the current prices where I live, feel free to cut and paste and tell me your rates:

Region: Central Scotland
Price per Litre: £0.789
Price per Gallon: £3.55
Tourist Rate for £ to $ as at 4th May 2004: £1 = $1.70
Price per Gallon in $: $6.035

For ease of reference, I am generalising that 4.5L = 1 Gallon. Not strictly accurate but close enough.

Also bear in mind for non-Brits that 75% of that cost is taxes for Teflon Tony.

Damn, we Aussies are doing better than you Kiwis. Our petrol is still only 94 cents per litre. That's roughly equal to $4.28 per gallon. Again, most of the price is for the government, even the GST on excise.

But are you accounting for Currency Difference? The cost is probably more like 1.40

In the US, the Federal Government picks up 18.4 cents, the State gets anywhere from 8 cents (Alaska) to 29.65(New York), then City tax which is usually from 0 to 4 cents. John Kerry has promised a Federal Tax of 50 cents to help cover other Federal Government expenses.

First, note that many of you are using the wrong conversion.

Do remember that the american gallon is also different from the british (correct) one. (insert gratuitous joke here about small things in the States that they think are the same size as elsewhere.... remember to include swipe that this explains why they needed to invent Viagra...what the helll, somebody else already brought the Dong into the discussion... )

anyway, back on topic....

1 UK gallon = 1.2 US gallons, or, if you prefer, you only need 3.785 Litres to the US gallon. So you will need to refigure your calculations.

Now, based on the 82.6c I paid per liter this moring, that is 3.13Cdn per US gallon, or about $2.26 USD per gallon.

For you Poms, that's still only about 33 pence per litre.
For you other euros, about 0.50 per litre
For the Kiwis, .95 NZD per liter
For the Aussies, 0.829 AUSD /liter
And, for the vietnamese, about 8351 Dongs per litre...

This I didn't know! But then I didn't know how much a British Gallon was either, I had to ask an older colleague in my office to find out. Damn metric system! It always confuses me how the British Media always go on about price per gallon when talking about petrol but every single petrol station in the land sells it by the litre? Im sure im not the only one in Britain who wouldn't know how much a gallon is, British or US.

And why does the US have a different gallon size? Anyone know?
