can you ever really know whether there is a god or not?
i was recently called a fence-sitter and apparantly that's despicable... but i'm not sure that it is really possible to truly know whether there is a god or not. sure some people claim knowledge one way or the other, but i wouldn't say that they know. they simply believe that there is a god (or multiples thereof) or there isn't. it's not really knowledge then is it? it's simply blind faith.
or am i just rambling?

It's impossible to know anything at all. All of our scientific laws could simply be the result of a remarkable series of coincidences, but that is, putting it gently, rather improbable. The fact is that there is a dearth of solid, nonslanted evidence in favor of a deity, despite millenia of studies. Therefore, believing in God makes as much sense to me as believing cats are some sort superintelligent creatures that use sleeping as a cover for their intense brain activity and telepathic hive-brain synchronization in preparation for a world takeover.
Sure you can know if there is a God. All you need do is die. Otherwise you just follow your own belief.
Based on our current knowledge of science, we cannot. Based on our beliefs and traditions, we already know.
Some people claim to have seen God, or have received a sign from God. But who knows if they can be believed or not? What makes them special from everyone else?

If gnosticism is right, then yes. But it is a long and hard road to experience God

I'm going to go with umm, NO! 8)

That’s only if there is an afterlife. If there is no afterlife than we would never know.
Kill yourself. Then you will find out.

I come out near the first principle of many classic Jewish theologians- it is impossible to "really" know anything about God, as there is (theoretically) a fundamental gap between the infinity of God and the finiteness of man.
So, yeah. I know it's impossible to really know, and that all people have are beliefs and opinions. Which I see as really cool, as it means (at least in my perspective,) that all opinions are valid.
Score!
If he gets his lazy arse off his cloud and coes down here and performs miracles or some such.
That'd shut the athiests up.

he performs a miracle everytime someone prays for salvation from him, that person who deserves death and eternal judgement, recieves God's grace and eternal life
