I hate to sound naive but can anyone who knows please explain the british honours system and orders. i'm studying it and am lost. thanks

The orders of chivalry? What confused you in particular?

yes.
the orders of chivalry really. are more recent orders like statutes and modify previous customs? oh, and the grades are a tad confusing too.

I don't thing that the orders are created by statute, Various monarchs seem to have simply established them on a whim...

Debretts is terribly good with this sort of thing usually.

btw, I didn't mean that orders were created by statute but if more recent orders' customs modifed older orders' customs
