They'll smile and say their your friend in front of you, and if you don't kow tow to them, they'll stab you in the back!

Well yea, they're evil.

I tend to auomatically distrust anyone who wants to be in charge of something involving large sums of money, so I tend to keep all politicians at arms length. But there are gradations of politician, some of whom I depsise more than others. Worst of all are the ones who, whether from conviction or cynicism (doesn't matter which to me) invoke religious belief and custom to set one part of a population against a minority. I've got no use for that kind of scum--wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

I don't think they're "evil" (as in psychotic-dictator take-over-world-evil). I think that a lot of them rely on smearing and mud-slinging rather than actual platforms, though.

There are some exceptions. These are Canadian ones (I'm from Canada, land of corrupt politicians  )

Larry Spencer--he's my MP, I appreciate his stand against gay marriage.
Sheila Copps--stood up for democracy and what she knew was right, even though it cost her the nomination.
Jack Layton--of the 3 main parties, he's the only leader with an actual platform.

Why is it that people aren't voting for these people who are honest and intelligent?

In Canada, there is one party (the Liberals, actually centrist, the leader is a former shipping tycoon) who have been in power since 1993. Scandal after scandal has rocked the party and government. They're guessing an election will be soon, and the Liberals are most likely going to win, while Jack Layton's party (see above) will get third. Is something wrong with this picture??

Politicians are in positions of power, and like they say, power corrupts. Couple that with the fact that most politicians basically have to make a deal with the devil to get elected in the first place and yes, you can say politicians can be labeled as evil in general.

Of course they're evil! In our (our being America's) political system, you need to be a corrupt, backstabbing, greedy bastard to run successfully. It sucks. Even the third party guys, who claim to be different than the rest of the system, are evil little people (especially Nader. Greedy punk, will risk Bush getting re-elected just for his 15 minutes of notoriety).

When all the politicians are evil, the only thing you can really do is vote for the least evil guy (i.e. John Kerry), and slowly try to reform the system. So sad.

Not to sound cliche'... but

There are bad apples in every barrell.

Unfortunatley... the people who are decent politicians and have no agendas... are for personal freedoms (as opposed to taking them away)... financially conservative yet socially liberal...

are not willing to run for president

I have to agree with this. Power.. as well as money (ie: look at corporate america) corrupts.

That is why I feel...

No politician should be able to serve more than two terms.

Also.. I feel that no EVP of ANY publicly traded company should have a salary. They should be paid based upon whether or not the company meets their goals for a particular quarter. For instance.. lets say.. ABC Company hires a new CEO.. he would get a certain amount for a sign on bonus.... but then after that... let say that the Board of Directors for said company states that they companies goals Q1 are increase of revenues by 8%, and earnings by 7%, etc.. if the company reaches this goal.. the EVP's will be paid a certain dollar amount.. this is more or less a bonus/commission type system. If they only meet a certain percentage of the goal.. then they would only be compensated for as well as the company performs.

I might as well throw my two cents in.

Do I believe politicians are evil? Of course not! The political game is nothing but that, a game! You do what you must to survive! If you are not "evil" (as I assume you guys call it) you will not win. You have to do what will get you the best chance at winning the next election. No matter who you are (liberal or conservative), that is how it works. They go back to their basic human instincts and become cut-throat and only strive to get ahead. Yes, there are honest politicians. But generally, they are not re-elected. So are the politicians evil, or are the people who elect them just plain stupid? I say the second one is true.

One last thing, I can guarentee you that if any of you guys who say politicians are so "evil" got elected, you would do the same exact thing. You have to play the game to survive. Change the system or deal with it.

This can actually be proven.
 Interesting to note:
The average person has an IQ of 100.
IQ scores are based on a normal distribution, usually with a standard deviation of 15.
So this means that 68% of the population should have IQs between 85 and 115.
It also means (and this is the scariest part) that 16% of the population has IQs of UNDER 85!!!
Scary thought...

Depends on your definition of evil. If by evil you mean actively seeking to purposfully do harm to others, then no, 90% are not. But if you mean incompetent, petty, greedy, stupid, shortsighted, and ignorant, then yes, 90% are evil. But that definition would include 90% of all people.

In short, politicians are people. People may or may not be evil.

it would be worse if iq tests measured a real thing other than ability to do iq tests (and to some extent cultural and socio-economic background).
