For the ones on the list I'd say Paris.

But overall, worldwide, I'd put down San Francisco, Capetown and Sydney for sheer beauty of natural setting.

For Imperial grandeur the City of London itself is impressive in a rather grey neoclassical sense.

New Yawk, of course. No city is more impressive in sheer scale and engineering, as well as all the others things that make it the greatest city in the world. As I've always said in regard to cities, green is good, gray is better. No place I've been to epitomizes that philosophy as much as New York. :) There are cities with excellt grand-looking, beautiful architecture, however, to my eye, the sheer functionality of New York's buildings makes them beautiful in their own right. Kind of like a modern warship or warplane.
For setting alone, well, there are so many to choose from, it's rather hard.

I would have to say the most impressive city i have ever seen is good old London. It is the home to some of the most historical and spectaculr buildings in the world e.g Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London, Tower Bridge, The Houses of Parliament (Westminster Palace), Westminster Abbey and Big Ben

The loveliness of Paris
Seems somehow sadly gay;
The glory that was Rome
Is of another day;
I've been terribly alone
And forgotten in Manhattan;
I'm going home
To my city by the Bay:

I left my heart
In San Francisco,
High on a hill
It calls to me...

I have to side with the hometown of choice- New Orleans.
I was just wondering how many of the optional cities I would have been to. I have not been to Rome or Venice...
I just didn't find Paris to be that great, and New York is much bigger than necessary.
New Orleans is wonderful...but San Fran is my favorite

Both good choices...Have you been to New Orleans?
It's a very similar feel to Charleston...I mean, just because there is a city instead of a swamp, I don't see why that makes the city less attractive...

I don't understand why three of us have answered New Orleans, yet it has only been voted for twice...

I have to disagree with Rome entirely. The way that city handles its lower-earning portions of town is wretched. I have seen better conditions in the slums of Chicago. Their water was horrible and most buildings were layered with ages of soot and smoke. The Vatican was grand, as were most of the historic sites (Forums, Trevi fountain, etc), but those have to kept "up" otherwise the tourism industry would fail. The actual city though was bleh.

I'd have to say the Island of Mykenos, off of Greece. I have never been to a more charming city. Everyone was nice, the natural setting was superb, the sunsets were something you would see on a calendar, and the building style was unique (all off-white plaster with bright blue trim and shudders).

Vote for the worst: Aydin, Turkey.

Well, it is horribly over developed. And it has more shrubs and bushes than trees. And this friend of yours from Seattle...I can understand. Seattle has soooooooooo many trees. It's like a fricken forest. San Fransisco doesn't have trees compared to Seattle.

San Francisco isn't so much overdeveloped as it is properly developed. Sorry to hear about Seattle, more concrete and steel can fix that problem, though. :)

You can hardly argue that the most beautiful cities in the world aren't located in Europa. From the most known, like Paris, London, Rome, Venice, Madrid to Amsterdam, Budapest, Barcelona, Brugge, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Edinburgh, Firenze (Florence), Munich, Oslo, Salzburg, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, Vienna, Zurich. I probably forgot several others....
Add to these countless pictuesque and stunningly beautiful smaller cities and villages....

Just wondering if my language skills were up to par, I figured you were a Dutchman by your use of "Europa" rather than Europe. What are nice places to go to in Holland? Other than the standard red light districts and glitzy tourist spots, I mean. When I visit places, I'd rather see what it's really like rather than just the image that it purposefully projects.

My use of Europa was not an accident, that's the continents name. As far as I know, there are only two languages that use the name Europe, French and English, all the others name it Europa. The only continent which name doesn't start with an A.

About nice places in the Netherlands, and not Holland as most abroad would call it (North and south Holland are only 2 of 12 provinces, but have the most well known cities and most of our 16 mil. population), Amsterdam with its canals and almost entirely 17th century 'golden age' city centre, the relaxed ambiance is to me one of the nicest places here. Red light district is way overrated, but a foreigner would probably still be amazed. Lost of drugs to buy there, aside from the softddrugs available in the coffeeshops, and someone needs to kick all those junkies and bums out of there...
Amsterdam is the largest city, but it 'only' has 1 mil. pop. most cities here have less than 200k, nice historic city centres (mainly 17, 18th century) and lost of bars, terraces and little shops. Places to go; The Hague (where many international tribunals are located, and the seat of government. Leiden, Delft, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Groningen (entirely new citycentre, cause it was bombed to smithereens by the Germans) home of the largest sea port in the world (Europoort, literally 'gateway to Europa'). Den Bosch, Maastricht, Breda, Arnhem, Nijmegen where I live lost much of its medieval centre when the Americans 'accidentally' bombed it.
Delta Works, incredible sea barriers in the south to protect the land, considered one of the 7 or 8 wonders of the modern world. Afsluitdijk, which blocked a part of the sea so it's now a lake, and Flevoland, a province made by draining part of that lake. Much of the country is a huge river delta, with 4 major rivers flowing to the sea; Rhein, Maas, Waal, Schelde. In the north, the 'wadden' which in low tide fall dry and where millions of birds reside on the small islands there.

When you visit my country you'll probably find that traffic on the highways is pretty much congested every day, since it is so damn crowded here; the most densely populated country in the Europa. Trainssystem is excellent and Schiphol airport is arguably one of the best 'hubs' in the world. Indeed, the country is stuffed with windmills, we have Heineken, Amstel, cheese, 'polders', dikes, flat lands,much of it below the sealevel and many many small towns etc. etc. 'Hansje Brinkers' with a finger in a dike, is a character made up by some American author...

This all seems too much like a commercial now...unintentional.

Most Americans visit 'Europe' and not one particular country. The Netherlands is about the size of New Jersey, so you probably won't spend weeks here. The other 'low country' is Belgium, the north of this country speaks Dutch too, or Flemish as they call it; theyre our little brother in every way ;). Nature is not a major asset as 90 percent of the surface here is cultivated, and we have no mountains, only some hills. For nature in the traditional sense, visit any other European country...
