True socialism and the American Indians

Althought I haven't read up on this topic that much, I think that the closest thing anyone on Earth is going to see to socialism is the Indians. There were many tribes, but I think some of them exhibited the biggest points of this economic system.

The hunters went out and got food for the whole tribe, while others stayed back and took care of things such as housing, clothes, weapons, etc. They had their tasks and they did them, and they all contributed for the benefit of their fellow tribesmen.

What do you think of this, and why do you think it was? Did the size of the tribe matter (smaller tribes made it easier to work for the good of everyone)? Is there anything I'm not taking into account here?

I think with quite a few very small, tribal communities (Kalhari bushmen of Africa, for one) have a form of 'government' very close to socialism. For one, mutual cooperation in such an environment tends to be a neccesity. As it has been stated many times before, communism and socialism work best in very small communities.

One comment is all I get? With so many socialists roaming the General forum, I am surprised.

socialism works perfectly in a small community. Not so well over a country of millions.

So am I. Then again, this topic actually has the potential to go somewhere interesting, and who wants -that-?

It has been done to death (IMHO) in the socialist/anarchists threads. The general conclusion is generally no on AmerInds (possibly a fewq isolated examples), but maybe on some other cultures (with debated caveats).

Well I try to stay away from those threads....

But don't the Indians deserve their own thread? The MAN has been putting them down for centuries and now this is their chance for acceptance among the population of the NS General forum!

Whatever... :::wanders away wondering why someone would start a thread on a topic he would try and stay away from:::

This topic is about a specific group and the socialist qualities they have, not socialism or anarchism in general.

well, there is a reason that the term for such societies' economic structure was primitive communism.
