Say hello to Iraq's new flag. Without warning and without the public's general concent the Temporary Governing Council introduced a new Iraqi flag.

And they are already burning it in protest.

How are you supposed to make a flag though?
Not all countries have symbolic flags.
They should get Palestine's. They won't be really using it anytime soon.
And no Arab nationalist would burn it...brilliant!

Was the old flag that bad?
Don't they have more pressing issues then a flag?
I heard they don't like it because it looks like Israels.
I guess the white and light blue portion of it that is....

You know, anything anyone does is going to suffer criticism. If they kept the old flag, someone would protest, have fits and scream "burn Americans!" If they made a completely different flag that had a Swastika or "kill all Jews," they'd still probably have conniptions.
The old flag had "Allahu Akbar," or "God is Great" written on it, in between the stars. They were going for, in this one, a flag which remained nice and secular-neutral, and didn't have colors reminiscient of the old flag, which many probably identify with Saddam.

Saddam added the arabic writing to the old flag to try and win support of the people during the Iran-Iraq war (I think). They should have gone with the pre-Saddam tricolour. Or at least allowed a vote on the issue.

A flag represents a nation, they are under a new government and a new structure. I think it is a good sign that this puppet government moved so quickly to change their flag, it represents that they are no longer the same nation. And why put it to a vote, not even the US voted on their flag.

They might just feel that a flag is something they want to choose for themselves rather than get handed something by an unelected group led by a convicted felon that was imposed on them by the occupiers.
I mean - what was the hurry? Could this not have been left to the first elected government next year?
A flag is a national symbol of pride. Would the Americans feel the same way about Old Glory as they do if it had been handed to them by the French at the end of the revolution?
It should at least have been picked by native Iraqis.

But the US didn't have their flag imposed on them by an occupying force. The new flag is being seen as a sign of the oppressors. It should have been put to a vote because it would show the Iraqi people that they have some self-determination. It would be a token thing, little more, but important. In Falluja they are flying the origanal pre-Saddam tricolour in protest.

I am sure this will cause even more harm than good. They could have waited until there was a general call from the public, or at least a referendum once the Provisional Government was functioning on all cylinders.

Red, green, black, white.
I'm shocked people are defending this move. Defend the war, fine
but this move just reaks of US arrogance and is exactly the type of thing that hurts US image abroad. Imposing a flag?
And more importantly, aren't their more pressing issues in Iraq, like water, or democracy?

I think they would like their flag better if it was red white and blue with a star of David on it along with a cross.

Yes they should have waited and used the design as a way to introduce the people into their new "democracy"
It would have been a simple act and it would have made some think "Hey I can actually have a say in something."
Ah well. What do I know right? ;)

the writng on the old flag meant "God is Great" in Arabic and was supposedly the hand writing of Saddam.

Here here.
So when do we get to use this flag as a NationStates preset (when's the Iraq flag going to be amended)?

the flag with the Saddam writing became the national flag in 1991 to help raise Arabic support for Iraq after the 1st Gulf War. The one with the three stars was made in 1963 when Iraq wanted to form the "United Arab Republic" with Syria and Egypt.
Useless information, but it'll help me out on Win Ben Stein's Money someday.

This is psychological warfare
There is a faction inside the Pentagon trying to force Iraq into a Civil War! They've provoked violence at every opportunity -- the idea is to create enough chaos as to justify anothe Saddam like dictator to come to power! This Administration has a history of installing puppets through-out Latin America and the Middle East... this is just the one we get to watch on TV as it happens.

The blue look likes Israel's flag. Iraqis aren't going to accept it and they have already not accepted it.
So much for a new flag.
