They grow old so fast these days...

*paints bedroom black and listens to the Smiths*

thats a little weird, but her fav. color is probably not really black. around that age, my sis would do anything for attention. including throwing my younger brother out of a window. it was a semi-accident!!

No...I find the color black goes well with my hair. Although so does red and dark blue. Mmmmm....silver....

Now if she starts wearing goth clothes, then you got a problem...*shudders*

Man...what is it what all the adolescent/pre-adolencents in your family? Your brother, your cousin.....

How many kids you got Offerman?

Yes, black is unhealthy. I'd lock her in "The Box." :P

black is slimming don't you know!

but yeah I would agree with the point made about goth clothing, not that I have anything against goths but you'd want to be careful about what kind of people she was associating with if she started dressing that way

be more worried if she starts waring a bomber jacket, cap huge looping earings and saying init! as smoking crack, snorting coke and beating up people is the only next logical step!

(a word that should only be spoken in relation to unix/linux startup scripts in my opinion!)

hey, goths are cool (and some goth girls are pretty damn hot too :-P), depending on how much they are into it. PErsonally, i think that if she goes goth and starts cutting herself and starts developing a liking of death and all that stuff, then you have a SERIOUS problem, otherwise, i dont see a problem.

True, theres gotta be a limit, but i dont think theres anything wrong with having collars and spikes. In fact, some people look pretty cool wearing them, its just when it gets to the point where they have a LOT on, thats when it gets "unnerving" (plus they startt looking either ugly or wierd, no offense to anyone who wears a lot of them)

I wouldn't say there's anything particularly strange about it. When I was in that age bracket, my favorite color changed pretty often, but ever since I was little, I've liked black. Even if she starts to go a little goth, I wouldn't worry too much. Everything in moderation and all that. If she does start cutting herself though, then I'd recommend she start seeing a psychologist, because that's often a sign of an actual problem.

Fascination with death isn't terribly unusual, either. Killing small animals or other people because of this fascination, on the other hand...

Black is an awesome 'color' (for you picky people who say it's not an actual color =p)- most of my wardrobe these days consists of comfy black clothing. Certainly takes off a lot of the stress of what to wear out!

I agree. Children at that age are starting to experiment with identies, trying them on as you might consider a new style shirt. Leave it alone, your disapproval or other strong response will serve to encourage her since it gives her the power of affecting you.

As ever, keep an eye on things and deal with what is - not what you fear.

Have you ever seen the movie "Parenthood?" Kids do strange things as they experiment with the world and themselves. Generally, in the long run, it all comes out fine.

I don't envy you the teen years. It is a lot of work. But the hope is they grow out of most of their pre-, and actual full blown, adolescence. My daughter was a real piece of work in those years but now she and I have a very close loving relationship.

Hang in there. Keep faith in life.

You know what might make her less of a fan of black? Get her dressed up in an all black outfit, black shirt, black pants, black shoes, and a black hat, and take her outside, to an amusement park, or the beach, or a ball game, for an entire day during a very sunny day. She'll be considerably less inclined to wear black afterwards.
