Updated Fundraising Numbers & Other Fun Stuff

28-04-2004, 07:48
New campaign fundraising figures show pretty much the opposite of what the average person thinks. Instead, they show what a good deal of us already knew...

The President leads the fund race, with a large number of small donatons from around the country, and has the most devoted repeat donors. John Kerry leads in funds donated by our nation's wealthy class.

You won't be seeing this on your evening news, that's for damn sure.

Also, for fun:

See who your neighbors are voting for this year.

Where the money comes from.

the neighbors website is pretty creepy
I know that my high school friend's father donated $1800 to Bush!
That's very weird....

Nothin' creepy about that, at least. You've got some progressive thinkers in your area. My area's more conservative that it'd appear, which is pretty surprising, donation-wise. Either is Hollywood or Santa Monica, believe it or not. The actors are a nest of commie rats, but the working people in those areas gave Bush a pretty penny. I guess some California stereotypes may not be totally accurate. 8)

Just so you folks know--that database isn't exactly accurate or up to date. I donated a reasonable sum to Howard that isn't showing up at all, while my girlfriend and her dad are both showing up twice with different amounts by their names.

It's a cool engine, but it's not an official tally or anything like that.

It's current as of March 31, '04. That is, it includes all forms processed by March 31, 04. Some states take longer than others to process forms, though the cash gets to the candidate much quicker. Also, donations totalling less than 100 dollars, total, aren't included for a few states, but the cash is calculated. I originally found the site off an article from a major paper, off Drudgereport, and bookmarked it. Either way, it should be reasonably accurate. The cash totals are accurate, at least.. if you donated anonymously, then the cash is calculated, but the name not listed.

Edit -- Here's a disclaimer:

"All calculations are based on records filed with the FEC of contributions by all individuals totalling more than $200 to a single campaign between January 1, 2003 and March 31, 2004. This site is updated according to the reporting schedule set by the FEC."

Still, many small (20-50 clams) donations are listed. Weird.

I haven't donated since December of 2003, so my donations should be on there, and my donations, while not ridiculous, were certainly more than a hundred dollars total--more on the order of five hundred. And it's illegal to donate anonymously to a presidential campaign, so that can't possibly be the case.

I've seen this before, having gone to it from other sites as you have, and I can't explain the omissions or the apparent double posting of both my girlfriend and her dad. I'm just putting my personal experience out there.

And this is a completely private enterprise--the site has no connection with any candidate or party.

I'm not too sure on the specifics, since I've never donated, but I think some people donate to the DNC or RNC rather than the candidate. Not sure though. Everyone I know who donated showed up just fine. The article said the data was direct from FEC, but the data entry definitely could have flaws. Either way, the main topic I meant to raise was the rankings for largest number of small donors, loyalty, fat cats, etc. which are quite different than the average person might think.

You have to swear that you're a US citizen and that the money you're giving is your own and not from someone else. Donations to the parties are slightly different, but you still have to provide personal information--just to keep foreign citizens from trying to influence the election.

Is there any kind of 'decline to publish' option or anything in any state? Some people on the site didn't list their occupation or full name, etc. I'm not sure, but I remember hearing there was back in school, though I could be way off.

I'm probably just one of those data-entry glitches.
