How would you like to be told you're going to hell because you're not a Christian? I hear it from many people: Young Christian right-wingers, televangelists, even my mom (though not as directly or harshly).

I only have two opinions to share:
The Bible is fiction. It's based on stories, myths, and hallucinations caused by drug use.
The Christian Right is neither Christian nor right.

Dude, the reason you're being told you're going to go to hell is probably because you're calling the Bible a pipe dream. That'll evoke anger from a lot of Christians and Jews. And, although they may not be justified in calling you such, you've still got a very controversial opinion on the Bible.

(I admit, the Bible isn't all true. However, there must have been a fight from Egypt, there was a King David, Solomon, and the like. So, it all came from somewhere. I'll recognize your right to have religious freedom if you'll not diss the Bible that 7/8 of the world founds their religion on. (Alright, that number is estimated, but it's still very high)).

That number is really, really, really off. And I don't care.
The bible is fiction.
I don't tell them that. I just say "I'm not a Christi--" and I get cut off.

Only the heathen Christians are not allowed to express their ideas and opinions. Telling the heathen Christians that *they* are wrong, however, is a good and holy quest and is necessary to convert them to The Truth (TM). Something is bad only if the <insert whoever one doesn't like here>'s are doing it. The <insert ones own religion here>'s, however, are free to do whatever they please.

And no, this isn't hypocrisy, because the <insert ones own religion here>'s are incapable of sin and wrongdoing....

Indeed. You give too much credence to extremists. Even though they arent to be ignored. Self righteous types like to make a lot of noise and make it seem that they hae more credibilty than they really do.

Dont forget. America was founded by puritans. But now there only exist the Capitalised versions.

Fundamentalists bitch that aetheists attack their beliefs. But its really a tweo way street. We dont like to be told that our beliefs are wrong and that if we dont come around to yours we will be punsihed.

That might not constitute a threat by legel terms. But you can still see how an individual may interpret it that way.

But you can still see how an individual may interpret it that way.I don't understand it, though. It's not saying, "I will do something bad to you", but "Something bad will happen to you."
28-04-2004, 07:03
Exactly. That is the definition of a threat. "If you dont do this (Believe in god) Something bad will happen to you (You'll go to hell) And a vauge one at that which is even more unsettling.

Modify it a little and get rid of the religious brackets and it could be a mobster saying it.

Exactly. That is the definition of a threat.Merriam Webster says it is "an expression of intention to inflict evil, injury, or damage". I have never seen a Christian threaten to send someone to Hell. (It also says "an indication of something impending", but if that's the definition we're using, then saying, "tomorrow the sun will rise" counts as a threat, too.)

Humans are social creatures. Its natural to listen to what others are saying. No one likes to be secondguessed. Christians dont like the implications of a non christians belief. And Atheists dont like the inplications of a christians belief.

And Nancio. That definition is flawed. Dont play Semantics with me. And dont selectively quote.
Dictionary.com defines it as
1. An expression of an intention to inflict pain, injury, evil, or punishment.
2. An indication of impending danger or harm.
3. One that is regarded as a possible danger; a menace.

And the highlighted is the context in which I mean.

and dont selectively quote.Should I have quoted all three definitions instead of two of them?
2. An indication of impending danger or harm.
3. One that is regarded as a possible danger; a menace.

And the highlighted is the context in which I mean.If I said, "If you don't get out of the way of that speeding car, you're going to get hit", I would not understand why someone would get upset at me for making a threat.

The Christian Right is neither Christian nor right. This is indeed a problem. As a Conservative, I uphold a persons right to believe or not believe in whatever way they chose. As a Christian, it is not up to me to judge another as to whether they are going to Hell or not, that is entirely up to God. Most faiths (Christian or otherwise) discourage the use of drugs. History itself is nothing but a collection of stories and myths, it is up to the individual to make the choice on what to believe about it and what not to. To me it is better to be right-wing, and a Christian, than to be otherwise. To someone else, it is not the right choice. What is the problem?
