The band who does the theme song, named Puffy AmiYumi (Just in tyhe U.S., they're called Puffy Internationally. They can't have that name here for obvious mix-ups. The Bad Boy Record Sales might plummet due to hard core rap audiences suddenly convulse due to high effieincy injections of J-Pop) actually is a pretty famous band overseas.

These two girls have half a dozen CD's out, and their latest one, NICE, is their third English title.

THeir Single Internationally is Akai Buranko (Red Swing), English version named Planet Tokyo. From their Teen Titans Theme, you would have never thought that these girls could do quality japanese punk rock. Red Swing is a pretty damned good song. I recommend it.

As for proper anime, yes, he does mean non-American anime. Teen Titans is okay, but it's nothing to get excited over. That Magas XLG thing is more exciting that Teen Titans, if not only because I'm thinking of stealing mecha designs from it.

Bugger! My posts about myself have backfired on me.
I am hoist by my own petard.

But living in the UK actually.

Another thing, btw, you can't really generalise about Europeans as if they're a single block. They're much less homogenised than Americans are. The Dutch, Italians, Germans, French- they all have different cultures. And if you try to call the average Brit an European he'd probably laugh at you.

By Germanic I assume you include Scandinavians and Anglo-Saxons? What about the large numbers of white Americans of Eastern European and Southern European descent?

And most W. European countries have massive immigrant populations too, y'know.

You somehow sound like homogenisation is a good thing. It leads to a very watered down, bland culture. Just like most American food :) Seriously- I mean American chocolate, whats up with it? And American beer? And don't get me started on American cheese.

I caught one episode of the program in Singapore a few weeks back and I can say that, apart from the obligatory anime funny animal humour, the whole lot are copies from the original 80's comic book run and it's adjuncts.

I think I prefer original Manga rather than DC trying to outdo Marvel in franchising this stuff.

American Pibith(Put It Back InThe Horse!)

"All other nations are drinking Ray Charles beer. We are drinking Barry Manilow." - Dave Barry. I classify Canadian beers along with American beers, not because I want to upset Canadians, but because it's realistic. They claim to be Pilsners, but are really just extremely light lagers that are produced on a massive scale, with all sorts of adjuncts, as part of a rather Orwellian industrial process, by Breweries that spend as much as 10 time as much money on advertising as they do beer production. I am an American, and I find it a bit embarrassing that the self ordained "King of Beers" is made with rice. Rice beer! Yuk. Also referred to as Lawn Mower Beer, because of the fact that you can drink it like water on a 90 degree day when the back 40 needs to be mowed. There is real beer and then their is American beer. Each has merit, but the two should not be confused. To quote the somewhat famous humorist, H. Allen Smith, upon first tasting American beer, "Put it back in the horse!"

Coke and pepsi actually differ from country to country- they do always taste slightly different depending on what taste tests have shown the people prefer. I like coke myself but I think it's just marketing- from what I've heard in blind taste tests people choose pepsi more often because it has more sugar in it.

LDG: "Budweiser is the king of beers because it won all nationwide taste tests."

You see- this is what I mean about the blinkered, provincial sort of American. Wow. It won all nationwide taste tests. That doesn't mean that people who are used to beer that DOESN'T taste like horse piss consider it the "King of Beers". Lager wise, I'd take a Tiger beer (from Singapore- voted best international lager in worldwide championships) over any other lager any day. It's a pity its so expensive here in the UK seeing as it's imported all the way from Singapore.
I'd still take any European lager (Grolsch or Amstel or Heineken etc.) over an American beer like Budweiser.

BTW there is only one real Budweiser- Budvar!

Budweiser is the king of beers because it won all nationwide taste tests.
AHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Oh, you were serious... The only reason I would drink Bud is because it was the only beer left. It has no taste! Maybe that's why it won, because everyone didn't hate it. Try Urdinger (a German lager) if you want some real lager. That is some nice stuff. American culture doesn't suck, just bits of it. I mean you've given us Scrubs, a variety of good cartoons (like Powerpuff Girls, Family Guy, the Simpsons) and books like 'Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas' and 'The Catcher in the Rye'. Then again, you've also given us trash like MTV, Friends and some really, really bad movies. So everyone is not slagging off your culture. IT's a matter of taste what bits they slag. But every time they say they dislike something. you say no, it's good, it's a matter of personal taste. Personal taste isn't just your personal taste, y'know? They can have opinions too.

Are you trying to piss me off or is that an accident?

Not particularly, no. What in particular pissed you off?

The crack about American beer in general, Budweiser's inferiority in particular, my reference to Budvar or my comment on the blinkered provincial American PoV?

If it's the last one, I'd like to ask you to look at your earlier comments. How do nationwide taste tests in America prove anything about the superiority of American Budweiser? If it's the best of the mass production domestic American beers I'd expect it to come out high in the taste tests as the average consumer can't afford to habitually buy imported beers or microbrews. What other beers was Budweiser up against in the taste test? If it was stuff like Coors or Miller or something like that, it just means that Bud is better than other domestic American beers. Put it up against Amstel or Kronnenburg or something like that and see what happens.

Like I said, provincial American attitude- the assumption that an American taste test gives Budweiser the right to declare itself "King of Beers"

The sad thing is that they're not just copies from the 80's comics. New Teen Titans was probably the best Bronze age Series around. It was entertainment designed for intelligent teens and adults. But the show doesn't really take many of the good qualities from the series.

Basically, they took the DC Animated Universe, who's core following is fifteen to twenty-year-olds, and the teen titans, who's core following is twenty-five to thirty-year-olds, and tried to make a show for five to ten-year-olds.

It's like the Batman/Superman/Justice League cartoons, except without the creative talent, the animation style, or anything else that made them good.

(And for the Record, DC has NO creative control over it's superheroes. They belong to AOL-Time-We-don't-care-if-it's-crap-were-making-money-Warner.)

Granted, The Hulk sucked and so did Halloween:Ressurection or however you spell it. Both Power Ranger movies sucked to, as well as all Olsen twin projects.

Thankfully, I missed the Hulk. The worst movie I've seen recently was Jeepers Creepers 2. Meant to be a horror movie? Not scary. Not even making me jump scary. (I jump when people shake water bottles in my face. I am a twitchy bugger.) It sucked and blew. Then again, they also gave us things like Leon and Saturday Night Fever (both on last night on Irish telly at the same time...) so it can't be all bad.
And the Olsen twins get a pardon for their sucky acting cos they're nice to look at... You can tell I'm a guy, can't ya?

The Ring terrified me. Good movie, but it scared me. I kept thinking the kid was gonna come get me. I'm such a wuss. I have Ringu (the original) on tape in my living room, I'm too scared to watch it.
Olsen twins, plastic? They are like seventeen (my age). Not many people have plastic surgery that young. Possible, but still.
LDG, what other fine girls? Anyways, that's a matter of personal taste. I have different tastes. I wouldn't put them above any of the girls I've fancied in my school, by the way. And they would probably bore the pants off me...

Wow what a fun thread - and all over another trashy cartoon (ok I've never seen it but I think i know the type we're on about here)

Anyway after reading all the stuff about "American vs European" food/beer I would have to agree on the Pro-European argument - as the (ex)-owner of a Delicatessen I knopw what I'm talking about. American cheese generally sucks - to a cheese expert - but then how much american cheese is actually made on a farm (or at least how much that any of the readers of this thread have tasted - including myself) none that I;ve come across. I'm sure such a thing does exist but no-one outside the town it's made in has ever tasted it (probably) but then America is so much geared to mass-production that it's no real surprise if that is the case.

Mass produced food and drink is always going to be inferior wherever it's made.
Hersheys is no worse than Nestle or Cadbury's chocs they all suck - if you want real chocolate you have to go to (for instance, but I stress NOT only) Belguim.
If you want "real beer" you have to go to a beermaker who cares about his/her product not some "brewed under license in the uk" stuff (although personally I have to admit to being a Kronenbourg drinker) or that revolting stuff Americans call "budweiser" (lack of capital letter deliberate - well said to Anglo-Scan for the Budvar comment).
If you want real cheese British FARMHOUSE cheeses are exported worldwide at great expense due to the small scale production - no-one will ever order up a peice of American Monterey Jack or UK Anchor "blah blah" Cheddar from some posh restaurant in Italy or HongKong or wherever cos it's rubbish - nor will they order a barrel of "the king of beers". A Bierre du Gard from France or Belguim or a Round of Gorwydd Caerfili cheese however will travel round the world!
During my time in the Fine Food trade the only thing I found that the americans seem to take pride in is their chilli-sauces - and yes THEY ARE the best (and believe me I've tried over a hundred )
At least the Americans have a Mr Blair THEY can be proud of!

True- mass produced stuff will always be inferior to the tailor made stuff but I'd put forward the statement that American mass produced foods generally are of lower quality than comparable British or European foods. I agree that Cadbury's or Milka can in no way compare to belgian chocolates but I must say that they are head and shoulders above Hersheys.

And comparing mass produced beers I'd have to say the same thing- speaking as a penniless university student, I can't afford microbrews and stuff like that but quite often here in the UK pubs serve up "guest ales" which are basically ales produced by small local breweries- it is possible to get good quality at a relatively cheap price there. As for the mass produced stuff, like I said, lager-wise I'd take a Grolsch or a Kronenbourg over a budweiser any day.

What exactly happened with the Budvar case in the US? Here it's sold as Budweiser Budvar. In the US is it just marketed under the name Budvar without the Budweiser?

Point taken about the beers. There's a good pub here (Aberystwyth) which regularly serves guest ales, which I do like from time to time despite being a lager drinker. I refuse to drink Bud (not budvar) it really does taste like yesterdays dishwater.

I have to disagree about the chocs though - after belgian chocs, I can't eat Cadburys et al any more either.

As for the budvar question - I don't know the answer to that. Maybe they sold the rights to the name?
