Comedy of [Political] Errors

As I sit back and observe the world around me, I realize that political parties will (to some extent) contradict themselves in their beliefs. This is why although I am center-left / left, I do not associate myself as a Democrat, or with any political party.

This is probably the biggest cliche in party politics:

Democrats - believe that a grown person should not die for their crimes (no matter how terrible), but a woman has the choice to abort her pregnancy (thus killing the potential child)

Republicans - believe that a grown person should die for serious enough crimes, but will fight to keep an unborn child from dying

Quite cliche, yes?

This is why I am a member of no party
This thread is NOT meant to discuss either abortion or the death penalty; i am just using them as probably the biggest example

The apparent contradiction, I think, stems from the fact that the differences have less to do with the value placed on human life than on the competing values of social control vs. individual freedom.

I know. They think they are so different because they both support capitalism and government.
