Serious question: slugs and moles

What do you get if you put a slug over a mole?*

*despite appearances this is not a joke.

A rather slimey, unhappy mole? :?

And the slug probably wouldn't be too happy either!

Nope. I said it wasn't a joke.

It actually has an answer exact to seven decimal places...

slug = 28.35 gm mole = 907.18 kg?

Right lines but not quite right as far as the figures go.

slug, 14.5939 kg? I hadn't come accross that one before.
Mole, 6.02 x 1023 atoms...

Uh-huh. And the answer is?

Don't we need to what the mol is made up of before we calculate?

A mole of nails should have more mass than a mole of Fe.

Could the answer be "division by zero error?"

Don't we need to what the mol is made up of before we calculate?

Not if we notice,as Eynonistan has, that the number of atoms in a mole is (by definition) a constant.

Different atomic weight though means that mass varies.

This is a a good way to ruin someone's morning.
And I seem to remember having a hard time with it back in the day.
I went back and editted a cute "division by zero" error because I was sure this was a trick question, now I've got to go back and do some reading.
Thanks a lot

Different atomic weight though means that mass varies.

Damn. You are right. Apologies to all concerned.

The correct answer, by the way, is 14.5939029 kg/mol.

I'll explain the reason for the thread now.

I discovered the Google calculator the other day andentertained myself by entering such calculations as "two feet divided by a teaspoon" "one lightyear multiplied by a cup" and the like, and remembered the units of the mole and the slug, and thought I would see how many people recognised them.

I guess I should have tried "a slug over a teaspoon" as that would have worked better. ( 2,960,871.38 kg/m3)

I hope that you checked that it had neither a slug nor a mole on it first.

Ahhhhhh! Not advanced chemistry! Thats when it gets all boring and you can't burn splints with your bunsen burner anymore, or mix a whole load of magnesium and hydrochloric acid.

Ahhh. Standard Grade Chemistry.

I do realize that there is pro'lly fun stuff to do with formulaic equations and whatnot, but burning things is just too much fun...

Damn, you're taller than me. That extra inch looks a lot more impressive in parsecs.

I weigh 1,029,000 grains, for what it is worth.
