Pressure of other NS posters a factor on your opinion?

You can be anonymous and not post, so long as you vote. But tell me, is the fear of other's opinions about your opinion causing you to change your opinion in posting here?

I'm just wondering. It would be kinda scarring to be a first-time debater and get blown away by 20 Canadians on the death penalty issue.

Nope, because everybody's so darn opinionated, it's fun!
And I always know I'M right, so there. *sticks out tongue*
Of course, that's just the confrontational person that I am.

I don't like to stand around and get flamed. I'll just walk out. So, maybe yeh.

I go easy on the conspiracy stuff. But other than that I mostly make others afraid to express poorly thought out opinions.

I felt under too much pressure to conform! How can I vote if Idon't know what the rest of the forum think?

Heh, my political opinions are often so remote and detached from what everyone else is thinking, it hardly matters anyway. I guess some people might try to avoid fitting into the stereotypical liberal or conservative mould, but I am a true independent.

If anything, NS has reinforced my severe lack of political/social views. We're all a bunch of monkeys.

Have you heard the saying about everyones opinions and brown-eyes? Everyone has an opinion and it's no more valid than yours, Speak your mind, always.

I rarely express my opinions on politics & religion IRL, so that doesn't alter on NS. There are other (serious) topics that I post on/start & I'm not influenced by what people on here are already saying at all

I also rarely express my opinions on here anymore, after you've been here for over a year there aren't many arguments you haven't heard before.

Anyways, I'd much rather discuss them down the pub. :D

EDIT: Plus you dont get the diehard Nazis on the boards anymore....takes all the fun out of the argument...Christian fundi's aren't really the same. :(

Let's see I am a Conservative, Christian, who supports the war effort.
Would anyone else's opinion have even the slightest possibility of effecting my posting? I think I would have to say yes, unless you want to debate the issue then I would have to say no.

I would say no because you are so remote from the actual discusion. If we were face to face then I may not say something contentious (ooh big word) to your face out of politeness.

( an unfortunate aspect of my upbringing is politeness and the fear of making a scene in public, some Brits still have this traditional outlook)

But over the internet I can be rude if I wish, because you dont know me, you only know me as Jeem! I can't make a scene because there is no public! I can freely express my opinions.

What I do not like, and I have said this before, is when the arguments start to descend into personal insults. At that point I tend to leave.

I did call somebody a Yank once, but he objected so I apologised. To me it wasn't a deliberate insult, I view the word the same as Brit, just a decription.

I said no. Whenever I see most arguments I remember a quote from Voltaire. "I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: 'O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.' And God granted it."

What if I was to call you an English Twit?.....

Feel free, as I have just learnt that you are Scottish I would actually expect a lot worse than that.

As I mentioned in my thread "Saint Georges Day" I am an Englishman living in Scotland, and have done so for 14 years, so I am well aware of how disliked the English are. Water off a ducks back by now!

I used to get called English Tory Bastard so much that I started calling myself it and signed letters to friends ETB.

Its all true except the bastard part, as my parents were actually married prior to my birth.......unlike most scottish children today! ha ha only joking, remove the scottish part and make it most children today!

Hey the Scots are more welcoming than the Welsh (no hatred of the welsh I lived there for 3 years, had a great time, just met some real idiots to put it nicely). I have never had one derogatory word spoken against from from a Scottish person. Well one, and probably Jet once he reads this  .

I think the disliking is in the mind of the English - if you don't think about it - it doesn't happen.

(Ps I'm English if you didn't guess - well British is more to the truth :D )

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, stop it my sides are splitting!

Every Scottish football fan supports 2 teams, Scotland and whatever team England are playing.

It doesn't bother me, like I said I am used to it, but the English get blamed for everything that goes wrong in Scotland. Watch and I will demonstrate:

Hey any Scottish people, what do you think of:

Braveheart
The Poll Tax
Bannockburn
Maggie Thatcher
Westminster
The Union
North Sea Oil
Tories
Culloden (sp)
Flower of Scotland & King Edwards Army
The Highland clearances
Generally the state of the country

I actually like Flower of Scotland, great tune, and you should hear Scottish fans when they sing it, they really love the bit about "sending him homeward to think again!" even I do! A lot better than that dirge we call the National Anthem, God Save the Queen, god how depressing.

I also think that somehow the general screwup that is the Scottish Parliament will be blamed on the English at the end of the day, I don't know how thats possible but Im sure they will find a way.

Reading that back in preview it looks kind of negative, I love Scotland and love living here and the people are great. They just have a chip on their shoulder about the english, and who can blame them after reading the list above.
