Happy Day of Silence everyone! Rainbows for everyone!
It's great to live in a society that doesn't care who you are, they will accept you anyway!
YAY!
?
I can't tell if that was sarcasm, and it's easier to ask you what the day of silence is than try to look it up

It's just a day where (if you support gay rights) you go silent to protest the inequity. It's supposed to be ironic because for a long time the protests have been silented.

I know... I was wondering myself how I was goingto get around that.... but it should be fun!

It's not just for gay people anymore. It's a general type thing. I'm being as a memorial to all those who have been killed because of their race. How many voices have been lost in the scuffle thanks to bigoted fools?

LOL I thought the Day of Silence was a little later in the year... like May
All I want to know is, why do the Gays get to have a day of silence to show that they are forced into silence by the christians; but the Christians never get a day of silence because they are forced into silence by the gays? :P

All i am wondering is, why isn't this a day of silence for ALL who are oppressed?Look at Toccata Land's response about 4 posts above this one--many people are using it as a general day of remembrance. And the last time I checked, there were no gays forcing Christians to shut up about anything. I always laugh whenever the majority cries about being oppressed by a minority--it's such complete and utter bullshit.

Gays: "I'm gay, accept me! blah blah"
Christians: "being Gay is a sin, please keep it to yourself!"
Gays: "Oh you're just an intolerant bigot. You need to go to a class and learn to accept us!"
Gays: "We're forced into silence by the christian right blah blah"
Christians: "Weren't you just telling us to shut up and go take a class on tolerance (acceptance)?"

Calm down buddy. I wasn't attacking you.
A couple of months ago, they made that gay Episcopal priest a bishop or something up here in New Hampshire, and there were literally hundreds of people from both sides of the debate standing on opposite sides of the street leading to the arena holding very vulgar signs and stuff shouting back and forth. To say that anyone is silenced in this society is rather absurd. I think the whole Day of Silence thing is about how often our society forces homosexuals to be silent about their homosexuality, especially in the business world. Christians hardly have a hard time coming out about their Christianity.

[/joking] Well we've come along way and I hope one day we can have true equality in right and responsabilities for all.

That's a compeltely seperate deal.
Gays IN religion, and gays in the world, are two COMPLETELY different topics, of which I have drastically different opinions.
Gays in the world: Tolerate them.
Gays in Religion: Contradiction, kick 'em out of the church.. don't give them promotions!!

*sigh* Don't tell me there isn't a double standard there. If you were accurately describing the situation, then sure, there would be--but you're not.
It may surprise you to learn this, Raysia, but most christians manage to get along fine with gay people in the US. Honest--it happens all the time. There's far less condemnation and bigotry than there used to be.
But the condemnation and bigotry that still exists is quite loud and at times disgusting (I'm talking about the Fred Phelps types here). And it would be disgraceful no matter what group was being denigrated in such a way. Polite society doesn't stand for African-Americans being called subhuman--why should we accept it for any minority group?
If gays say that they were forced into silence in the past by christian bigots, they're telling the truth. It's an historically accurate statement. All gays are asking for is to be treated as everyone else is--with human dignity. Nobody is asking you to be gay, or even asking for your approval. All they're asking for is tolerance. Their lifestyle doesn't affect you in the least--and yet when you condemn their lifestyle as sinful, your lifestyle is affecting them, because you're perpetuating the hateful stereotypes that christianity has promulgated over the centuries.

Oooh, I don't know how I feel about that. I think that a homosexual can have a close relation with God, since I don't think God hates homosexuals, and I think they should be allowed in Churches, but they know the prevailing attitude in most religions, and it seems alot of the time they try to get into the clergy simply to cause a media riot. I don't know how I feel about that.
Anyway, my example was just trying to point out that no one is really silent in our society, gays or Christians.

I am very tolerant.
I only seem not so because of this open forum.
I have gay friends, I have no problem tolerating them.
But ACCEPTING them? That's a whole 'nother matter.
Tolerance: I don't care that you're gay. Why should I care?
Acceptance: Your lifestyle is good and healthy and cool and I support you and I don't care what my religion says about you!

They're still people, even if they're behavior is disgusting.Disgusting to you, you mean. To a gay person, a man having sex with a woman may be disgusting. To me, going an entire day without caffeine is disgusting. It's all subjective--we all have our own little things that make our stomachs clench involuntarily. It's an important difference--gay sexual behavior may be disgusting to you, but it isn't to everyone, just as going a day without caffeine isn't to everyone, and in fact may be enjoyable to some. You've got to move beyond this absolutist way of thinking--it's part of reaching adulthood.

I suppose that's a nice use of a Big Lebowski quote.
The Day of Silence is supposed to be a day when people who are pro-gay rights are voluntarily silent in a show of support for gay people who are often forced to go silent as to their orientation because of prejudice.

No, parades are usually quite noisy, so they kind of defeat the idea of a Day of Silence.

I meant parades, as opposed to being 'forced to go silent.' But never mind that. Whatever works.
