Have You Traveled Outside Your Country - Or Will You?

I don't travel often, but have managed to get to a few places in my life; namely England, Malaysia (both parts), Costa Rica, Hawaii and Dominican Republic. I once drove nearly 3000 miles (in a rented cube van) from Atlanta to Vancouver in an L-shaped route paralleling much of Old Route 66. I've also gone by train from Toronto to Vancouver, another big distance.

Where have some of you been - any good tales?

I've never left the Country yet, but I certainly intend to. Even got a list.
Rome, Athens, Tokyo, Moscow, Boston (because of the music), and anywhere else, with lots of history and culture. (Within the country I want to see London.) I know that this is only cities within the nations themselves, but it is likely that when I do go to the country, I will only have enough time to take in one city.

I was born in Reunion Island (French overseas department in the Indian Ocean) and I've lived there until I had to go to Paris because of my studies.
I've been several times to Mauritius Island, once to Italia and once to Croatia. So, I haven't traveled a lot, but I wish I did so.

Isn't that a very small place?

Did it feel confining, not being able to ramble far afield? Did you get any selection of TV or radio stations?

I'm working on it--I figure while I'm living on the west coast, I really ought to get to Canada and Mexico, and once I get back to Florida I can concentrate on the Carribbean, maybe even some of South and Central America. Europe and Asia eventually.

I've been to England twice (lived there for around 8 months once), Maylasia twice and I'm currently in China (I'll be here for a total of around 6 months). Travelling, it's great! I can't wait to do Inida, Nepal and Tibet. Want to do the rest of Europe too, probably head to Spain in my summer holidays (they're at the end of the year in Australia) this year (my mum is moving there, free plane trip for me! ! !).

Driven form Melbourne to Perth, that was pretty cool and been up as far a Brisbane, I love northern NSW. WA's decent too.

I've never been outside of the US. I don't have a passport, legal matter. But, I've been places in the US that seemed like distant and foriegn lands. Like, Madisonville, TN. I didn't understand what anyone said, the people acted and dressed differently than I do, and everyone lived so far away from each other on thier own hill(they called them mountains) it seemed you couldn't see anyone around. Even with my in-laws there it seemed very lonely, like you were all alone. I've been to Key West, a tropical paradise, and ultra-tourist trap. I've been to NYC and Boston, to see the sites and again it seemed I spoke a different language than everyone there and didn't really undrstand the things they did. I have never been to another nation but I've been to foriegn places.

Okay, here are the plans (none of them reasonable or likely, but hey...):
North America in my VW Bus. (the one that gets cranky going to the next town...)

Central and South America by Land Rover.

Africa by one of those cool planes that can land on land or water, like in The Brass Monkey...don't pretend you never watched The Brass Monkey...

Asia, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe I haven't a clue. I'd like to do one on a motorcycle, but riding a cruiser in Europe seems wrong and going long distances hunched over seems painful. WAAAAYYYY to lazy to do them by bike. And I'd like to walk The Great Wall.

Or, you know, substantially leave California for at least a little bit...which ever...

Can't do any of that until our leadership stops kicking sand in everyones face. I don't want to spend my entire vacation explaining what's up with America...
Anglo-Scandinavia
21-04-2004, 09:33
I'm Singaporean and I've been to...

Malaysia,
Indonesia (Java and Bali)
Brunei
Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Tassie)
Taiwan
Thailand
India (all over)
China (Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai)
Egypt
England (where I'm currently studying), Scotland and Wales
The Netherlands
The US (New York, California- my parents currently live in San Fransisco, Tennessee)
Planning on getting around to seeing the rest of Europe whenever I can. I do love the Netherlands though (not because of the pot- I don't smoke it, just because it's proof that social democracy does work)

Live in England have been to all the British Isles (Inc Eire) Belgium,Holland,France,Spain,Italy,Norway,Germany,Poland,Turkey,Egypt,Thailand,Japan(twice, China USA (NYC,Alaska,Texas,Minnesota,Florida)
But whats more important than having a list of visited countries is...
What have you learned ? That I guess is different for everyone.
The bad guys (whoever they are) might not be as bad as you think.
The reverse is also true.
21-04-2004, 09:34
I'm from Australia and have been to the following:
New Zealand (for about 48 hours all up, generally just stop-overs although I intend to go there properly sometime)
Norfolk Island (kind of an overseas bit of Australia) on several occasions
Singapore - extended stop-overs en route to Europe
England (London, York, Winchester, Stratford) twice - one of my favourite places in the world, particularly London
Italy (Tuscany, Rome, Venice)
Germany (Berlin, Goslar, Goettingen, very southern Bavaria) - an absolute joy of a country
Switzerland (Luzern, Lausanne)
France (Paris)
Canada (Quebec, Rockies)
USA (LA and surrounds)
Papua New Guinea - an unforgettable experience

I was also taken to places like Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the Low Countries when I was 18 months, but they don't count.

Hopefully I'll go back to most of those countries again some day - Italy and Canada had the experiences kind of ruined because I got sick.

*edit* Greece *forgot that one, thanks Jeem*

We used to have some fantastic European holidays when I was a kid, we'd take a car full of stuff, a couple of tents, hop on the ferry over to France then drive in a random direction till we found a campsite we liked the look of. Life was full of cheap simple pleasures and those holidays were always so exciting.

Well I go to Greece in July but to date I have been to:

England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. (Kind of cheating as I live in Scotland!)

France - sacre bleu, le froggies, forced to go there for a school exchange and also went to the south for holiday when toddler.

Germany - lived there for 2 years as father was in the army based in Munster

Italy - fantastico, two weeks in Sorrento. love Italy.

Spanish Islands - Tenerife and Ibiza - well I was young once and in your early twenties you do tend to want to drink a lot and chat up cheap women.

Hong Kong - back in the eighties for 2 years with dads army posting. great but smelly. great place, loved getting the Star Ferry to the island.

Malaysia - specifically Penang (sp). on holiday down from HK above.

Neverneverland - also known as the Spindom of Tony Blair. Have lived there since 1997. National Motto "Why Tell The Truth When A Lie Will Do".

Cheers

I really wished i lived in europe where it seems easier to travel.. :( In canada a road trip can be pretty bland, especially since i live on the praries, I could go to the US, it's about 4 hours south, but i don't really care to.

I had a friend who lived in Switzerland for a year, i remember in an email she told me about how her mother bought her pjs she didnt like, so she had to take and train to france to return them..boohoo.

I hope to go all over europe, maybe some of the west-coast us states, hopefully australia.

And if you believe that, I have some real estate on Mars I want to sell you. I have been to America Junior (well, more like Britain Junior, aka Canada), but only as far as Toronto, so it's not like I am a real foreign treaveler...until this September, that is, when I head off to Japan for a year. I have Lived in Okinowa Japan when my Dad and the rest of my family had to move to Camp Cortney wich is a military base. I learned a little bit of japanese and some of their culture but I will always refer to the people on okinowa okinowains becuase they are quite happy being part of japan and were enslaved during world war II and the only reason they stick with japan is to get dibs on its economy due to the fact they have few or no natural resources. They were very kind a respectful. When my dad went to the Mainland of japan he was denied service becuase he was an american. Okinowa though part of japan is very diffrent from the closed society of the main land. Ive also been to south Korea and france becuase they were were we landed between flights to and from Japan and the USA I was amazed to see that japan basicly followed me home (the whole anime craze here and all)

I've been out of my country, the US, quite a few times. I go every summer to the St. Lawrence river to fish, and of course, we need a Canadian fishing liscense. I've also been to Toronto a few times and to Niagra Falls. In fact, where I live in Upstate New York, a new ferry will shuttle us between here and Toronto, as soon as Canadian customs agents are prepared.
I've been to the Bahamas a couple of times in my life, and next winter, I'll be on a cruise in the Eastern Carribean. I also plan to, well, see most of the world. Europe is at the top of my list, but I also want to see Russia, Japan, Australia, the Middle East, and the Great Rift Valley before I die.
