Devil's Advocate

Sometimes both sides of an issue are right. Actually, there usually is some truth to arguments on any issue but, in many key issues a balance is important. One of the most famous is, freedom of religion vs. separation of church and state. We see this balance playing itself all over the world. Trying to work out the balance needed on such a large issue is an ambitious project. If you can lay out the logic for both sides we can hopefully converge on that balance, I personally believe balance is paramount. Below is an example of a simple issue which I can come up with an argument for both sides.

We need to separate the insane because they pose a threat to citizens. The government's job is to protect its people. Therefore, they must be separated if shown to have a possible intent to hurt others.

Everyone needs to be treated equally. Disadvantaged deserve the same rights as everyone else. Therefore, you cannot arrest them, unless they have committed the crime.

I could come up with more conclusive arguments but, one has to think out every step carefully. For those who have taken geometry, it has to be like a proof, with every step certain. I am not going to choose the topic but, I ask that it isn’t something controversial like stem cell research or gay marriage. This is an experiment into the possibility to justify both sides of the arguments in a thread and not end with, "you are wrong and I am right."
