Those poor seals in Canada. If we didn't start killing them the cods population wouldn't of exploded and then the seal population wouldn't have exploded and so we wouldn't have to kill the seals.

Now don't get me wrong. I not one of those crazy PEATA people. I'm just saying it's kind of fucked up going around and beating helpless animals to death with clubs. If they did it with rifles or something that would be okay but clubs? Still messed up.

Please forgive me but I alsu do not wish to be seen as a fanatic or as an animal hater.From what I have read seal hides make exellent water proof boots.I can find no other use for this animals hide.If you use a rifle or shot gun to kill this animal you will put holes in its hide.I beleive thats why they use clubs.

Good point.The killing should be done humanely.I'm not trying to debate or argue I just want to known more about the story behind the picture.

Are the seals being killed for sport?

Are they being killed by natives to make boots?

Is there a product we don't know about that uses seal hide?

Are the killersfishermen who mfeel the seals are competion ?

I don't know much about north Canada and would like to know more.

Okay that's pretty ignorant. This practice is done on the east coast (Newfoundland mostly). Your statement is like me saying, "damn those Texans and their Yankee customs."

There is nothing wrong with the Newfies hunting seals. BTW they are still Canadians. Salt of the earth too. No I am not one, but know many. Very hospitable people to say the least.

Um. No. They have some rights variously granted to them in some countries. There is little consensus really.

And I agree. If they really want the skin, a .22 pistol shot to the head would produce the same result for far less effort, and with less suffering inflicted.

I think Norway also uses the same claim.

They no longer use a club, they use a spiked rod. Done correctly the spike enters the brain and kills the seal very quickly. More quickly in fact than many animals killed in the slaughter house. I have said before and will say again, unless you are a vegan (people for who I have the greatest respect) you can't really complain about any of this.
Is it any more wrong to kill and animal for it's fur than for it's flesh, we can as a species survive without both.
As long as it is sustainable and as cruelty free as it is possible and practicle to be I have no problem with it.
Funny how black eyes and fur make all the difference. If they were ugly, bald and smelly do you think there would be the same fuss?
If there is a case for saving any animal it is the pig. More intelligent than a dog, but in the west it is a nasty thing to eat dogs but ok to eat pigs!
The only reason I won't eat dogs is I try not to eat any creature that does not have a natural predator.

What the hell is wrong with killing seals..... Our family has done it for generations, it is all part of the way the world works...
Why not worry about the sea turtles dying or something......
And not just berate people who hunt, just because an particular animal is "Cute"..... :roll:
