What is pain

What do you think would be the most painful thing.

I say: Getting your genetalia burned off.

A heavy migraine scores high. A broken collarbone (at least the first time) also. The loss of a friend/girl- or boyfriend/dog/relative probably tops the list. I've never had my genitalia burned off so I can't really say anything about that.

There is nothing in the world worse than physical pain.

I agree with these. Nasty.

I don't necessarily think physical pain is worse than emotional. Often emotional pain is worse, because it lasts longer and there is nothing to do about it, usually. Most of the time you know physical pain will heal (unless, of course, you have maimed yourself, and then there is usually emotional trauma with it too). Anyway, I guess what English needs is two words for pain, one for physical and one for emotional. We could use some more words to differentiate between different forms of love, too (like romantic, friendship, and family).

In my personal experience: having a team of nurses wrench your smashed knee into position for a temporary splint without the benefit of an anaesthetic.

Or actually, no. Coming round from a general anaesthetic, feeling like some bastard's just screwed several large metal bolts into your leg and then stretched them apart with a rigid frame. And then a split-second later realising that that is what has actually happened, but still not knowing why (because of the general).

Oh, there are cures for both physically and emotional pain. Thing is they don't last very long and then the pain comes back.

Hmm, I guess they aren't cures after all, just soothers...

You ask what pain is: I would say, on one level, that it is a Fibromyalgia flare-up that has lasted 1.792 days and shows no signs of ending ... that is pain.

Then again, tomorrow it will be 1,730 days ... then THAT will be the definition.

But that is only physical pain (that it requires the equivelant of 320 mg of morphine every day is another story, but it is, nonetheless, only physical).

Being slowly burned alive and dissolved from the inside out as your laying trapped beneath a rock that is slowly crushing you, that might a hurt a bit.

the worst pain is probably going insane because of isolation. humans are a social animal, so being alone is completely against our nature. drowning or burning or being crucified or electrocuted are all short term pain.

isolation from other humans is usually a much much more prolonged agony.

Being stabbed in the wrist and upper shoulderblade wasn't too fun. Giving worse than you get help ease the pain substantially though.

Maybe. The only time I ever got badly shocked was more confusing than painful. I pulled my hand away afer 2 or 3 seconds and it was alright after that.
