Well, interesting fact that goes with this one.
You've all heard of the Rule of Thumb, right? Well, the term used to be applied to wifebeating. A man was allowed to hit a woman with a stick, so long as it was no larger in circumferance than his thumb. Thus, the rule of thumb was used for any general shipshod way to do things.
