how dare you make a mockery of my favourite t.v show. The simpsons is still funny and will always be funnier than Futurama. The gags in Futurama are predictable and just simply not funny. However the simpsons is fantastic and will always be fantastic.

Simpsons could do with some new episodes more than once a week and Futurama could have gone a little bit longer. It's hard to decide between either of them.

The Family Guy.
Okay, this has always bugged me. Why do people continue to call this programme "The Family Guy", when the title http://www.fox.com/familyguy/images/family_03.gif
clearly has no "The" in it?
I mean, seriously. Cartoon fans on the Internet are generally known for their fastidiousness and attention to detail, no?

"The Simpsons" Seasons 1 through 8 are some of the best television ever conceived.
"The Simpsons" Seasons 9 through 15 onwards are OK (well, apart from most of Season 11 and Season 12 ;))but it wouldn't have been much of a loss if they'd never been made.
Personally, like West - Europa, I'm a huge fan of Futurama. I like it because it does emotional episodes a hell of a lot better than it's yellow-skinned cousin, and since I'm a sci-fi nut and computer scientist, the action and humour respectively appeal to me.
Futurama deserved at least one more Season and The Simpsons, undeniably brilliant though it was, could have done with 6 or 7 less. I don't perceive being the longest running show as a huge accolade; quite the contrary, in fact - it's usually an indication that the network (in this case FOX) has caught on to a money-maker and thus milks it dry for all it's worth. Only Fools And Horses here in the UK is another example.
As for Family Guy, well it's quite amusing on it's first watch but it has very poor rewatch value, IMHO. I found the humour style to get extremely repetitive and it becomes painfully obvious the plot is only there so they can insert some (usually very funny nevertheless) cutaway scenes. They might as well have made it a sketch show.
All In My Ever So Humble Opinion, of course. :)

I voted Futurama.
Is it better than classic Simpsons? No!
Is it better than recent Simpsons? Too bloody right!
I'm sorry, IMO the comparitively shite episodes we've had in recent seasons has really made me lose my devotion to The Simpsons. I used to watch it religiously. I still think the old(er) episodes are gems of TV, but some of the later plotlines are just too outlandish to care about. It's just playing for cheap laughs these days. They've run out of really good ideas I think. Either run out or realised they've done it all already and there's very little left to do...
But I still think if The Simpsons was still as good as its main hayday, I would probably have switched to Futurama anyway. Futurama just interests me more.
Futurama was given an appalling miscarriage of justice by FOX, who according to Matt, did it largely as just a personal vendetta against him. Jerks.

The Simpsons season 1 through 8 is some of the best animated television ever produced, the later seasons were a mixed bag at best.
Futurama on the other hand stayed consistenly funny throughout it's run, with one or two exceptions. It was packed with obscure science and sci-fi references (something I enjoyed tremendously), and some of the best present-day satire in any comedy. No matter how many times you watch an episode, you'll almost always be able to find another weird background joke, or obscure reference. And let's not forget it beat The Simpsons silly in the animation department, the 3D segments were flawlessly integrated into the traditional 2D animation.
One other thing Futurama had that the Simpsons forgot in it's later seasons was heart. While the Simpsons slowly developed into "The Hillarious Adventures of Captain Whacky", Futurama showed that you don't have to make a live-action show to create characters people can connect to and feel with.
And, yes, I am aware that people say the Simpsons are returning to their former self, but personally I haven't seen much evidence of that. Sure there's a few really good episodes now and then, but they still seem more the exception than the rule.
Buttom line:
Simpsons 1-8
Futurama 1-4
Simpsons 9-infinity
Overall I'd call it an even race, but Futurama inches ahead.

I've been pondering this question for quite a while now, and finally started devising various math solutions for it. While I don't actually have the equations written down, it basically comes down to quantity. Of course, the huge number of Simpsons episodes is going to push that in favor of them, but the real humor comes from the characters, and this is where the real meat of the issue is: who's funnier? This is the first discussion I've seen where Futurama is directly against the Simpsons, and now that it's come down to them, it becomes harder. All right, we have two forms of comparison, the main characters, and the background characters.
Main characters:
The Simpsons: the Simpson family (obviously)
Futurama: the Planet Express crew
Now, the primary humor factor from the Simpsons comes from Homer, and while I will say that one-on-one, he's funnier than anyone on Futurama, he doesn't have the backup that comes from the main characters on Futurama. Of course, I'm counting the entire crew as main characters, and some will argue that Hermes, Zoidberg, and perhaps even the Professor are minor characters.
Background characters:
This is where the Simpsons have their strong point, as pretty much every character on the Simpsons is hilarious at some point, whereas Futurama's recurring background characters don't have quite the humor factor.
Even so, I think I have to go with Futurama, because Bender has become one of my heroes, and Zoidberg is quite possibly the funniest alien in history.

South Park and Family Guy should probably also have been included, unless you were just wanting to compare the two Groening cartoons. I had to go with Futurama, although I do still find myself laughing at some of the Simpsons episodes.
I think that a lot of the funniest characters are the background characters from these shows like Disco Stu, Snake, and Mr. Burns. Though I feel that Zap Brannigan is the funniest character on Futurama.
My only problem with Family Guy is that I'm afraid that I'll get myself hurt by using a Quagmire phrase. Alllllll Riiiiiiight!

How anyone can say that the Simpsons is as good now as it was when it started I don't know. Every episode now seems to be 'A different guest star!' or 'Homer does something stupid again', and just aren't as good as they used to be.
Also, there seems to be characters not acting as they would, for example in the hippies episode ('Homer becomes a hippie! And he destroys the hippies' factory! Then Homer puts drugs into the drink!') Homer displays sarcasm ("Great, I'll just go shoot myself.") Since when does Homer do sarcasm? He doesn't! And then Grandpa talks about how his wife was a "demon in the sack!", forgetting that he once wrote a letter to complain that "Not all old people are sex loving maniacs." Its little things like that that really jar with what the series used to be: consistently good.

Futurama beats Simpsons, Bendor rules!
But Family Guy beats all! I vote for Stewie!*secretly hands him his map of europe*
Futurama is the better of the two, by far. The Simpsons I used to watch religously, but now the episodes are getting stupid. One of the best episodes of the Fifteenth Season (I, Doh'bot) had three cats killed meaninglessly, and a reference to Armin Tamzarian, which was something they really didn't need to dig up.
The episodes are getting better, but as it has been mentioned, it's obvious FOX is just milking a popular program to the stupider demographic.
Personally, I think Futurama has better jokes than the Simpsons. The characters are more refreshing too, robots and aliens are much more interesting to watch.

"Alright brain, you don't like me and I don't like you, so let's just do this thing and I'll go back to killing you with beer." – Homer Simpson

"You have 24 hours to give us your money. And to show you we're serious you have twelve hours." - Fat Tony
"Just because I don't care doesn't mean that I don't understand." -Homer
"Dear Lord, the gods have been good to me. As an offering, I present these milk and cookies. If you wish me to eat them instead please give me no sign whatsoever............."

..........."Thy bidding will be done" - Homer
“Hmmm... Eternal happiness for one dollar?... I’d rather keep the dollar.” - Mr. Burns

I am one of the more devout fans of Groening's TV efforts, but must agree with several folks on this one as to the differences of augmentation between them as character dvpmnt goes. Besides, what other show on Fox would "stoop" to using Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle as a main gag, even though a few of us saw it coming one line away!

Futurama is by far the geekier one: it has jokes about quantum physics, maths, infinity, computer games, etc. The geekiest thing I can remember on the Simpsons is a joke about thermodynamics.
But Futurama is (or was) much funnier than the recent Simpsons episodes. And I agree, Zapp Brannigan is the funniest person in Futurama.

"We hit this bullseye and the rest of the dominos will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate."
"We know nothing of [the enemy's] culture, language and appearance, but we do know one thing: they stand for everything we don't stand for. Plus, they told me you guys look like jerks!"

The Simpsons are undeniably the better show. It is the longest running sitcom of all time, for crying out loud!
That...proves...NOTHING!
Friends has been going for all too long (should have died many seasons ago), and
Letterman's been going for DONKEY'S YEARS now, and he himself said it best when he said "you applaud for 23 years of mediocrity".
And, before you start, I'm NOT saying that The Simpsons sucks - it DOESN'T. I love it - just that your argument falls down if that's your only argument.
How long something lasts isn't the only criteria for how good something is. Quite a few shows have been killed before their prime, and other shows lasted for years.
I don't know where to start explaining why Simpsons are better... is it the guest stars, the hilarious parodys and allusions, or simply a buff Scottish school janitor. :D
The Simpsons are as good as it gets, plain and simple.
No...I disagree. Even The Simpsons admits that it repeats some of it's own jokes (makes a parody of that fact, in fact).
Whereas, as for Futurama, we'll never know if it could have been better or worse because, for some reason, FOX CANCELLED it before its time.
However, I will admit that it does seem to get a little MAUDLIN in places
(I say Bring back Futurama, but with LESS maudlinity (real word?) and MORE BENDER!!!).
I DO like The Simpsons, but I like Futurama, too.
But, as for "Best of all time", I agree with the guy/gal who said "Family Guy". The Griffins ROCK!

Yeah, that was something which really irritated me when I saw it, stupid gags like that, and too much self-referentialism.
I think that is a word...
I have to go with The Simpsons... AND Futurama was definately pulled before its time... But nothing can beat the first seasons of The Simpsons. I love that show. And I can watch the reruns forever...and ever...and ever... *sigh* I need a life. :)
i have to say that simpsons is the best animated cartoon EVER!!! yes, better then all other anime and disney and futurama. futurama was funny though.
When did they stop making Futurama? I thought Matt Groening was to continue with Futurama after The Simpsons was finished.
And while I'm here I'll add another Simpsons quote.
"Okay Mr. Trampoline, you win. But one day you'll RUST, RUST I TELLS YA!" - Homer Simpson.
If the world printed money at the same rate people dished out Simpsons quotes we'd all be experincing hyperinflation.
Once again, Family Guy is the best show. But they all rock in their own little ways.

The Simpsons during the height of its greatness was twice the show Futurama was. However from season 10 onwards the episodes have been so awful i simply cant bring myself to watch anymore. Futurama however just kept getting better. They should have phased out The Simpons and replaced it with Futurama in my opinion.

When did they stop making Futurama? I thought Matt Groening was to continue with Futurama after The Simpsons was finished.
They stopped actually producing it sometime in early 2002. But because of the way FOX mistreated the show (sending it to the "Death Slot", continually pre-empting it for Simpsons and KOTH repeats (which promptly got even lower ratings than Futurama did), it didn't finish airing until August 2003.
And Matt Groening doesn't really get fully involved with "Simpsons" production anymore (or "Futurama", for that matter, although he was more involved in that one because it was more his work).
And I wouldn't support the argument that Futurama would replace the Simpsons. The two shows have different fanbases (although the Simpsons' fanbase encompasses virtually all of Futurama's, it doesn't work the other way around).

The best character from any cartoon is Mr Burns. He is just fantastic.
here is my favourite quotes.
Burns- "Since the dawn of time man has yearned to destroy the sun, I will do the next best thing, block it out."
Smithers-Sir I demand you step back from the brink of insanity.
Burns- (Burns slaps smithers) "I shall do no such thing."

While I may admit that Mr. Burns may be slightly better, Professor Farnsworth is definitely there with him-he may not be as rich, but he's at least as insane, plus he's got the weirdest inventions.
So, in that respect, a couple Professor quotes-
"Doomsday device? Now the ball's in Farnsworth's court!"
When Planet Express was taken over-
"I'll ruin you like I ruined this company!"

The best character from any cartoon is Mr Burns. He is just fantastic.

Burns- "Since the dawn of time man has yearned to destroy the sun, I will do the next best thing, block it out."
Smithers-Sir I demand you step back from the brink of insanity.

Burns - Look Smithers, I've created a new plane. I call it the Sproose Moose and it can fly from New York's Idlewild Airport to the Belgian Congo in 17 minutes!
Smithers - That's a nice model sir.
Burns - Model?
Burns: We can ride the Spruce Moose! Hop in!
Smithers: Uh, sir?
Burns: (Cocks gun and points it at Smithers) I said 'Hop in'.
Bart: Hello Mr.... Kurns... I bad.. want money now. Me sick.
Homer: (offstage) Oooh, he card-read good.
Bart: So pick please me, Mr Burns.
Homer: (Yells) It's Kurns, stupid!
(Fry, Leela and Bender are inspecting a fantastic apartment)
Fry: Well, I give up, what's the catch?
