Lord of the Rings:
It's got much more action and it has got more books on it so you can go deep and read all of LOTR based books.
Also it is more practical I live near a forest and I can imagine and ent and Frodo walking in it.
They are my reasons! :)

Oh dammit why, WHY, WHY?, WHY???

What is the obsession with making one thing rated as better than the other? They are trilogies and block-busters, but why must they be rated against each other? Why can't we happily look at them both with simple joy without having to rate one against the other?

Both sagas are among the best ever...but the fact remains that no movie trilogy has had more impact on movie history, that Star Wars.
This is not to slight the Rings trilogy...but Star Wars was groundbreaking in so many ways.....

It has had far more impact on pop culture, and cinematic events than nearly anything else.

The Empire Strikes Back, is regarded not only as one of the best movies ever....it is regarded as the best cliffhanger ever, by many respected movie critics.

Star Wars is far better than LotR, and I don't mean those new "Episode 1-III" stuff, I mean the good ol days of Luke & Co.
Of course, im more than likely biased in my oppinion, having been a fan of the LotR books before seeing the movies and dying a little death the way they decimated it..

I can't believe that crappy film about elves and faries has such a cult following... oh well, it's probably the same crowd that watches "Rocky Horror" every halloween...

And what was the pay-off for the 9-hour saga? You get to watch a very homoerotic scene between two midgets on a mountain...

"Oh Frodo, I always trusted you"

"I'm sorry Sam, hold me"

LAME!!

Well..in fairness to Tolkein...people didnt have the same kind of hang-ups they do today...

BUt.....you oughta read the books....there are times where your POSITIVE that Sam and Frodo are about to get it on....

Are we talking the LOTR films vs the Star Wars films?

If we are, are we looking at just the original Star Wars Trilogy, or are we taking into account the other three films - including the unreleased Episode III?

Or are we talking LOTR vs Star Wars in their entirety (ie, all the books, films, graphic novels, games, ideas, philosophies and universes they inhabit)?

IMO, if we take just the original New Hope, Empire and Jedi vs the three LOTR films, Star Wars wins hands down.

It's a bit trickier if your comparing the two ...franchises (Because that's what they've become).

I voted Star Wars, but they're both good. I haven't finished reading Lord of the Rings, nor have I read every Star Wars book available (but I have tried at one point). I just was a Star Wars fan first, so it's deeply ingrained in my soul. Doesn't mean I dislike Lord of the Rings, though.

Hey, they both had at least one movie that wasn't as great.

Hey, they both had at least one movie that wasn't as great.

And they both have a middle film that, I feel, is a whole lot better than the first or final acts. Empire and Two Towers (especially the extended/special editions of either films) are both quick-paced, chock-a-bloc with action, and leave you screaming for more.

In order to make the lotr movies they had to cut out alot of bits from the books, otherwise it would be too long... Lotr was writen about 70 years ago & things were very different back then & i personaly think lotr was & is better then star wars (plus my lil bro loves sw so of course i dislike it) :tantrum:

Well in my opinion if it was the original Star Wars Trilogy versus Lord of The Rings then I would have voted Star Wars, but you have to take into account the pretty dire new episodes of Star Wars that frankly have damaged the Star Wars reputation.

Its a bit like the Matrix in that regard, I thought the first film was fantastic. Imagine my disgust when the second film turned out to be crap! I didn't even bother to go see the third matrix film as I was so disappointed that they crapped out so badly on the second.

Star Wars suffers from that. The new episodes are just dire and drag the whole series down. Lord of the Rings has managed to stay consistently good however, IMO.

So I voted for Lord!

If you think about it, Star Wars & Lord Of The Rings are similar in a very loose way.

Both are epics about good fighting evil, with lots of cool sword/lightsabre fights in them.

I like Star Wars 'cos Darth Vader is simply second to none!!!

Star Wars and Lord of the Rings are almost identical. Same formula. Joseph Campbell was an influence on Lucas and a friend for many, many years. Power of Myth in action. Tough decision, but I'd give Star Wars a slight edge.

Star Wars all the way! Not only because the original trilogy had a bigger impact on pop culture, but because the Star Wars Universe is more expansive and fun. I am sure you LoTR fans are wondering, "How can anything be bigger than the universe Tolkien created?" Well, Star Wars has a large ammount of books, comic books, reference books, video games, and T.V. shows that add to the goodness that is Star Wars.
:D
I have all the essential guides and have read 40+ Star Wars books. I have also read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit, and a few other books and I enjoyed them. It's just that they can't compare to my favorite, Star Wars. Battletech ranks pretty far up there too, but its movie is still in production. May the fuzzy bunny be with you all.

Im sorry..I cant supress my Star Wars nerdness after that last post...

Obi-Wan would kick Gandalf's crusty old ass.

"Its called a "light-saber..an elegant weapon, from a more civilized age, BITCH!"

*zworp!*

Bet on it!

It would be an amazing sight to see. Balrogs having a fight with AT-AT's, Nazgul fighting TIE's, you could have aragorn fighting Vadar, if you gave him a cortosis blade. Of course, then Morgoth would turn up, with Sauron tagging along. Game over star wars. It would be nice to see a few thousand Balrogs swarming over a star destroyer.

I am a nerd, especially when it comes to these things. :)

I said LOTR, because, especially if you consider everything about both, books, fan-fic-movies, Rings has more history. The Silmarillion tells you how the universe was made, for crying out loud.
